December 3, 2015

Greetings in this season of Advent! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.

On December 8-9, we will have a special opportunity to thank God for the precious gift of life during the  National Night of Prayer for Life , a worldwide vigil from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with an "Hour of Unity" at 12 a.m. CST. A list of participating parishes may be found here.  If your parish is participating but is not listed, please let me know so we can be sure to add your parish event to the calendar.  The National Night of Prayer is a pro-life prayer service consisting of exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, 20 decades of the Rosary, prayer to St. Michael, silent prayer and hymns.

And as we look forward to the new year, we once again need your assistance in promoting the  Annual Diocesan Roe Memorial Events  on January 16, 2016, at the Dallas Convention Center.  The 2016 theme, "Speak LIFE to this present darkness," reflects a special focus of the Roe Memorial as we commence the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Roe Memorial Events provide a wonderful opportunity to observe the Year of Mercy as we pray for the women and men burdened by a past abortion and witness to the Church's loving embrace of those who are suffering.

The Roe Memorial schedule of activities is as follows:
  • Roe Memorial Rosaries, 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., at Southwestern and Panned Parenthood abortion facilities
and then at the KBH Convention Center in downtown Dallas:
  • Concert for Life, 11:30 a.m., featuring Vince Lujan and Manuel Bravo of Jesus Team A, among other popular local musicians
  • Rose Procession, 12:30 p.m. (If you are interested in participating in the procession, please email [email protected].)
  • Bilingual Roe Memorial Mass, 1:00 p.m., celebrated by Bishop Kevin Farrell with Bishops Michael Olson and Douglas Deshotel and Fr. Abbot Peter Verhalen, O.Cist., and homilist Fr. Edwin Leonard
  • North Texas March for Life, 3:00 p.m. to the rally outside the federal courthouse, featuring a dynamic speaker lineup including former abortion facility worker Jewels Green as well as Bishop Farrell, Dr. Tony Evans of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, and Mariana Schroeder -- the CPLC's new youth/young adult assistant for our Hispanic Pastoral Ministry.
We are in the process of distributing Roe Memorial posters and yard signs to each parish. (If you did not pick up posters and yard signs at the last parish pro-life coordinators meeting, you may pick them up at the CPLC office; please call ahead to 972-267-5433 to make arrangements.) Your pastor should soon be receiving a letter from Bishop Farrell requesting your parish's assistance in promoting and participating in these diocesan events. **Bishop Farrell has also issued a general letter of invitation to all Dallas Diocese Catholics for distribution (en espaƱol).**

Please ensure that your parish (1) includes the  bulletin announcement available here  (2) shares Bishop Farrell's letter in English and in Spanish, and (3) displays the yard signs and posters ( flyer versions available here ) in the weeks preceding January 16.  Please also consider helping organize a bus(es) to help transport your parishioners to the events. And be sure to check out prolifedallas.org/roe for complete details on the Roe Memorial Events, as well as digital versions of promotions to post and share electronically.  Your critical help in promoting participation in the Roe Memorial Events is appreciated!

Amidst all our planning during this season and in preparation for next year, it is important for us to take pause. We find ourselves making lists, trying to decide on the best presents for family and friends, and braving the stores for all our preparations and gift-giving. Sometimes we even stop long enough to admire the trees, decorations, and lights. Let those lights on the tree remind us of the true meaning of Christmas, the Light of the World, Jesus. He is the perfect gift given to us on that first Christmas by God Our Father. If we make Him the focus of this time, we can feel His love for all of us, His children. WOW, what a gift!

May you and your family have a very blessed Advent and a Merry Christmas!
