  • We entered our second decade of matriculating PharmD students at the White Coat ceremony for the class of 2016. The speaker was from our Charter Class of 2006, Joe Ennesser PharmD, Rx Consultant, Target Pharmacy, who urged our incoming students to become leaders and challenge themselves in his remarks "Oh the Places You Will Go".
  • Two of our students, Elizabeth Jackson and Jennifer Lee, won the Clinical Skills competition at American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear on December 2nd in Las Vegas Nevada. Both students are P4's and are busy applying for residencies for next year.
  • Our 3rd Annual UCSD Pharmacy School Legislative Day ("Leg Day") was held on October 27th, and focused on discussion about health care reform. This event is entirely student-driven, and the culmination of months of planning led by planning committee co-chairs Andrea Bechtold and Kevin Gan. The nearly 60 attendees included students, community pharmacists, faculty as well as staffers from the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA). Leg Day continues to be successful with increasing turnout each year.

  • Dr. Robert Ignoffo received the 2013 HOPA Award of Excellence. This award is given to recognize a HOPA member who has made a significant, sustained contribution to or provided excellent leadership in improving or supporting hematology/oncology pharmacy.
  • Dr. Paul Perry received the 2013 Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award. This award is presented annually to a senior psychiatric pharmacy practitioner who has achieved a level of professional distinction and demonstrates a continuing dedication to the practice of psychiatric pharmacy. Like Dr. Saklad, this practitioner will represent the qualities and ideals of professional enthusiasm, in addition to possessing a passion for optimizing patient care.

  • The University of Southern California School of Pharmacy ended 2012 with an 89% jump in research funding from all sources for a total of $16,548,599. This support allows USC to pursue a broad range of projects, such as a CMMI grant that evaluates the impact of pharmacists in safety net clinics and an NIH continuation grant studying perimenopause and brain aging and Alzheimer's disease.
  • The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Economics and Policy, a collaboration between the USC School of Pharmacy and the USC Price School of Public Policy, received a $25 million gift from Leonard D. Schaeffer to endow and support the center which has emerged as one of the nation's premier policy institutions providing solutions to today's health policy challenges.
  • The School's Regulatory Science program expanded to offer master's and certificate courses in a northern California (Mountain View); the Regulatory Science program launched a new MS in management of drug development; the School launched a new residency in managed care and a new dual degree program, the PharmD/MS in global medicine.
  • Professor Enrique Cadenas, the Charles Krown/Pharmacy Alumni Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences, was knighted (Chevaliers of the l'Ordre national du Merite) by France.

  • Election Day Health Fairs Target Underserved

Pacific Student Pharmacist Advocacy Coalition (SPAC) hosted two health fairs on November 6, 2012, Election Day, where student pharmacists offered their assistance to people within the Stockton and Sacramento communities. The health fairs were organized by Pacific ASP officers Scott Harada '14 and Jag Chauhan '14 along with pharmacy students from University of the Pacific and California Northstate University in Sacramento, California. In addition to providing general pharmacy information, the health fair also offered several types of screenings such as: bone mineral density, blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol and heart burn. Harada managed the fair at University of Pacific in the DeRosa University Center, while Chauhan took a handful of Pacific students and headed to Sacramento.

Both health fairs had a successful turnout and received positive feedback from people within the community. "We screened about 180 people at the community center in Sacramento. The community was very appreciative of the services that were offered. I had many people thanking me and other students for the services we provided. I was told by the administration of the community center that many people called in regarding free flu shots, screening services and when these services would be available to them," said Chauhan. The health fair on Pacific campus gained media attention from the Stockton Record, Good Day Sacramento and KTXL FOX40.

  • Pacific Students and Programs Recognized at APhA Midyear Meeting

Pacific student pharmacists celebrated several successes at the 2012 American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM).

    • Operation Diabetes and Operation Self Care (formerly known as Heartburn Awareness) each earned a Patient Care Initiative award. Together the two committees provided services to over 2,000 patients and reached approximately 8,000 patients through public relations initiatives.
    • Pacific was also the first and only winning chapter of the Region 8 - American Pharmacists Month (APhM) Regional Challenge Award. Within the School, students distributed t-shirts and water bottles with the APhM logo and gathered nearly 400 students to participate in the annual Tiger Army photo. In the community, student pharmacists designed a billboard on Interstate 80 East Business Route heading towards Downtown Sacramento to help promote APhM. In addition, they created a television advertisement which ran in the previews at all major movie theaters in the San Joaquin County area. They also made their annual appearance on Good Day Sacramento and hosted the annual "Immunize the Mayor" event. As a final statement, student pharmacists coordinated a trip to the Kings basketball game (against the Warriors) wearing their orange polos and were recognized during the half-time show. It is estimated that students reached nearly 10 million people during the month of October promoting APhM.
    • Two Pacific student pharmacists were selected to serve on the 2012-2013 Region 8 board. Chinye Nalls-Ahaiwe '14 will serve as Member-At-Large and Urvish Italia '14 will serve as MRM Coordinator for the APhA-ASP Region 8.
    • Daniel Salas '13 was also recognized for his many accomplishments. Salas was instrumental in organizing the inaugural "Haircuts for Health" outreach event last year; an event inspired by the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program from Los Angeles. His event made such an impact; he is now working with the original creators to host an extension of the program in Stockton.

  • Pacific Student Pharmacists' Poster Presentations Make an Impression

Thirteen student pharmacists along with faculty members attended the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland on November 6 - 9, 2012. Together they presented a total of five poster presentations which accounted for 12 percent of the meeting's posters. The posters covered topics such as asthma control, Medicare Part D, osteoporosis, and more.
