TwoTwo AHP Member Highlight
Each month, CPhA features an AHP member to highlight their background, involvement with CPhA, and recognize any best practices or achievements they've made in health-system pharmacy.

This month our AHP Member highlight is on  Edlen Wong, Pharm.D., FCPhA,  Lead Pharmacist at Kaiser Permanente.

Where did you study?
I studied at University of the Pacific.

How long have you been practicing?
I have been a pharmacist since 2007.

How long have you been a member of CPhA?
have been a member of CPhA since I was a student in 2004.

How long have you been a member of this Academy?
have been a member of AHP since August 2015.

Why do you think being a CPhA member is important?
Being a CPhA member is important on many levels.  It's all about the value of membership.  What's in it for me?  I know that my membership dues help support CPhA fight the battles to constantly promote and advance OUR profession.  I know that my activity and involvement allows me to continuously gain more knowledge clinically and professionally as well as build a wide network of friends/colleagues.  And back to what's in it for me, CPhA with it's vast variety of dedicated staff and passionate members, has been the key to opening doors for me along my career in leadership opportunities, job opportunities, knowledge opportunities, and friendship opportunities.  I can proudly say I would not be where I am today, doing what I do, knowing what I know, and who I know, if it wasn't for CPhA.  That's why being a part of CPhA is important for me and has done for me, just imagine what CPhA can do for you by being actively involved.

What do you think is the number one challenge for Health-System pharmacists?
If it was only that easy to just pick one challenge that Health-System pharmacists have to deal with.  There are just too many and it varies depending if you are an intern pharmacist, a staff pharmacist, or in administration.  Whether it's dealing with having enough residencies available, or dealing with medication safety issues on a day to day basis, or dealing with medication shortages and finding alternative treatments, or dealing with increase medication costs, or collaborating with other healthcare partners from other departments to give the best patient care possible, or figuring out ways to decrease readmission rates/increase the patient care experience, or dealing with regulatory agencies on matters such as sterile compounding/control substances/med errors, etc..  Don't forget about the JACHO survey and then here comes the Department of Public Health knocking at your door for their MERP survey.  That's just scratching the surface, the list goes on and on.  Who said being a Health-System pharmacist was easy?  I applaud all those who go through all this just to make sure our patients receive the best care possible.  Keep up the great work!

Naloxone Survey

In 2014, legislation was passed to allow pharmacists to furnish and dispense naloxone hydrochloride to patients without a prescription in accordance with a state-board approved protocol.  CPhA is currently surveying pharmacists to see what experiences or issues they have come across when dispensing and billing naloxone. Please take this brief survey here
