Bishop Peggy A. Johnson announces a new appointment

See complete lists of new clergy appointments and retirements.

The Rev. Joseph Martin from Fallsington (assigned as Certified Lay Minister) to Fallsington (appointed as Part-time Local Pastor)

Thankful for the ministry of Bishop McLee

We have confirmed that the funeral celebrating the life and resurrection of Bishop Martin D. McLee will be held Monday, Sept. 15, at the Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive, New York, at 11 a.m. Visitation will precede the funeral from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. McLee, 58, episcopal leader of The United Methodist Church's New York Area, died Saturday, Sept. 6, after a long illness.

"We have been deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of Bishop Martin McLee," wrote Bishop Warner H. Brown Jr. , president of the denomination's Council of Bishops. "Our hearts our heavy and our prayers are deep as we ask for God's mercy and comfort for his family, his many colleagues, and the people of the New York Area."

Bishop Peggy A. Johnson, who served with McLee on the board of the NEJ Multi-Ethnic Center for Ministry, expressed her "heartfelt sympathy" in a statement and in a post on her Bishop's Blog about this loss of such an exemplary leader, who was just elected a bishop in 2012. "We reflect on the brevity of life but also the amazing impact one life can have and the awesome work that this bishop was able to accomplish in two short years," she writes. Learn more...

Dewees Fund applications due Sept. 15

Applications to the EPA Conference's Dewees Fund for grants to aid important ministry projects appear to be declining; but the funds are not. Conference Treasurer Peter DiNofia reports that even though about $46,000 may be available for grants, only seven applications have come in so far, even with the deadline extended two weeks to Sept. 15. The small grants of up to $5,000 are given "to use in the mission programs of the church." But time is money. So if your church needs money for ministry, you may want to make the time to complete the grant application available online and mail it to: Eastern PA Conference Treasurer,  P.O. Box 820, Valley Forge, PA 19482-0820. The next application deadline will be March 1, 2015. Learn more...

Celebrate World Peace Day/Week, Sept. 15-21

The United Nations International Day of Peace ("Peace Day"), on Sept. 21 this year, is a time for local communities to celebrate, teach and emphasize peace (and justice). Philadelphia and other cities will observe this occasion for an entire week, Sept. 15 to 21, encouraging civic-minded individuals, groups, organizations, law enforcement and communities to engage in meaningful peace-related activities. Peace Day Philly, started in 2011 by the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia, promotes meaningful local participation in the International Day of Peace, September 21, through involvement in activities related to personal, local and/or global peace. This worldwide day of ceasefire and non violence can have a significant positive impact in the Philadelphia region through the active involvement of individuals, groups, organizations and neighborhoods. Learn about events and activities planned in and around Philadelphia and also suggestions about what you can do, at http://www.peacedayphilly.org.

Also on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3 pm, try to attend the World Peace Day Interfaith Prayer Service at People's Plaza on the SW Corner of Independence Mall, at 5th & Market Streets, Philadelphia.

Please let us know how and where you will participate in celebrating World Peace Day. Write to us at [email protected].

District offers training to bridge conflict, cultures

The Central District's "Leading from the Heart" Worship Conference, held Sept. 6  at Paoli UMC, was rich with discourse, demonstration and discovery about creativity, sensitivity and spirituality in worship, spanning the spectrum from traditional to post-modern modes and methods of glorifying God and edifying God's people. Look for a Website feature article on that event in the coming week.

But now there's more! The district is becoming a virtual academy of higher learning about challenging aspects of ministry for a new age. The worship conference included some necessary discussion about averting "worship wars" among church members with conflicting tastes. Next up are four more daylong interactive teaching events about ways to prevent, resolve and transcend conflicts in the body of Christ.  There will be two Conflict and Mediation Skills workshops for clergy and laity, and two Conversations on Intercultural Communications for clergy and laity. What's more, the Central District is not keeping its goodies to itself. All these bridge-building encounter sessions are open to the entire conference. So whosoever will, let them register without delay and attend. Learn more...

Why Community Engagement Matters

In 2012 the Lewis Center for Church Leadership prepared a short video on one of the Vital Congregations goals for use at charge conferences and elsewhere. It was done at the request of a superintendent, but it is free and available for anyone to use. Because of its wide use (over 7,000 views), the center offered another short video in 2013 and again in 2014.

The theme this year is "Why Community Engagement Matters" and the video is 5 minutes long. "We are happy to make this video available to you and to congregations," writes Dr. Lovett Weems Jr., center director and Professor of Church Leadership at Wesley Theological Seminary. "Feel free to publicize it to any in your district who may find it useful in their efforts to encourage connecting with their communities." You can download the video at this link.

The two previous videos are also still available:

Seminar to explore launching new worship services

Worship leaders are invited to attend The Domino Effect: Launching a New Service to Create Momentum for Your Church, Nov. 22, in York, Pa. Launching a new worship service for a new constituency is the most helpful thing many churches could do to "unlock God's future for their communities." When done right it pushes a church into much of the critical work necessary to reroot itself into a 21st-century community. And it can bless a lot of people who have never known that "church could be like this." At this event, sponsored by the Susquehanna Conference, dynamic leaders Paul Nixon and Jason Moore can help your church start a new movement in your mission field. Come learn to creative powerful worship experiences. Learn budgeting, staffing and community networking principles. Learn how to build, perfect and sustain a worship design team and how to maintain excellence. The cost is $295 per team, lunch included. For more info and to register, click here.

Witness in Common to explore Full Communion Agreements

The Pennsylvania Council of Churches (PCC) will sponsor a daylong symposium titled "Witness in Common: An Exploration of Full Communion Agreements" Nov.10, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2000 Chestnut Street,  Camp Hill, Pa. The Very Rev. Dr. Tom Ferguson, former Ecumenical Officer for The Episcopal Church, will deliver the plenary address. Afterward, small groups and discussion panels will share stories of Full Communion Agreements between denominations from their inception to their implementation. The day will conclude with worship and celebration of the Eucharist, during which Bishop Peggy Johnson will preach.

Full communion is when two denominations develop a relationship based on a common confessing of the Christian faith and a mutual recognition of Baptism and sharing of the Lord's Supper, while also respecting differences. This gathering is an opportunity to learn why these agreements are important to the missional church in the 21st century and to hear from leaders who implement agreements in local contexts. The Rev. Sandra L. Straus ([email protected]) , Director of Public Advocacy for the PCC invites anyone to come, and to bring guests, who have an interest if not involvement in ecumenical relations. For more information or to register, call (717) 545-4761 or go to www.pachurches.org and click on the conference link. You can also visit their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Witness-in-Common/1449239948675363).

Gifted musician to inspire church's caf patrons

Born without arms, George Dennehy plays with his feet, and sings with his soul.

Trust me. Whatever you have planned for Friday evening, Sept. 19, chances are, this will be much better. It's a very special concert, performed by a very special musician in a very special place. Conshohocken UMC will welcome phenomenal, popular singer and musician George Dennehy to perform at its own Jillian's Caf, a comfortable performance venue, adjacent to the church's sanctuary, that's as bright and beautiful as the person for whom it is named.

George Dennehy, born without arms, is an amazing young man who sings while playing the guitar and piano with his feet. Yes, take a moment and reread that last sentence. I'll wait.... The only sound perhaps more beautiful than his voice and his deft, soulful instrumental touch is his personal story.

It's an inspiring testimony he has shared on television and Web sites, in concerts and news publications. Learn more about him and his message to the world--a message of faith and infinite possibilities--on his Web site, where you can also hear his music. The venue for this sure-to-delight concert is ideal not only because of its acoustical attributes but also because, like George, its namesake overcame her own congenital challenges and became a grace-filled inspiration to many.  Learn more...

Celebrando Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month

Our nation's annual observance of Hispanic/Latino(a) Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, is when we especially recognize and seek to learn about the culture and history of Latino/Latina Americans and their contributions to society. The timing of this observance coincides with significant events in Latin American history. The United Methodist Board of Discipleship shares worship resources and other information.

Golf outing puts 'fun' in fundraising

"Guys 'n Gals, last night I was sitting with some young people who were talking about the great time they had last year at the "Nets and Vets" Golf Outing (Sept. 20) and how they were signed up for it again this year...and were encouraging their friends to sign up," wrote Ross Brightwell, EPA Conference UM Men's president. "They said it was a fine golf course to play; there were extra fun contests around the course, such as "Beat the Pro"; the cost was cheap; the food was great; the raffle prizes were very cool; and best of all it benefits two great causes - "fighting malaria" and "providing help for veterans!"

United Methodist Men will sponsor the 6th annual Nets & Vets Golf Outing Saturday, Sept. 20, to benefit the  denomination's anti-malaria campaign and a local Veterans Multi-Service Center. The location will be the Skippack Golf Club at 1146 Stump Hall Road, Skippack. Open to men and women, the charity  fundraising event is named in part for the UMC's "Nothing but Nets" campaign--now known as Imagine No Malaria--and the Philadelphia center that helps returning military veterans move past barriers to transition successfully back into their communities.

Starting times are 12:30 pm for arrival, 1:30 pm for the tournament start and 6:30 pm for the buffet dinner. The $90 cost includes golf and dinner, as well as use of the practice range, greens fees, golf cart. Dinner only is $40. Last year $3,000 was raised for donations, but organizers want to double that amount this year. So far they have raised more than $10,000 in five years. You can register at www.netsandvets.com/reservation.htmlContact Ross Brightwell at. 215/643-1269 or [email protected] for more information.

Finding Our Way: Love and Law in the UMC

All clergy, lay delegates (including equalizing delegates), and all interested laity, should read this book to prepare for the October dialogues to be held in separate clergy and laity sessions during the Bishop's Days on the Districts. The book was given to all who attended the Clergy Session at Annual Conference. The dialogues were suggested and approved by conference delegates as a forum where six resolutions related to human sexuality, church law and clergy covenants could be discussed. The resolutions were referred to the Cabinet to be discussed during the dialogues rather than debated during the Conference session. An arrangement of holy conferencing table talks, similar to that used by other annual conferences, is being considered. The book is available at cokesbury for $10.39 (a 35% discount).  People with visual disabilities who use e-readers for large print or screen readers can find this book for $9.99 at http://www.christianbook.com/apps/product?item_no=64840eb;item_code=ww
