History

Lean about the fire that destroyed Hopewell on December 9, 1915

On December 9, Jeanie Langford, local historian at the Hopewell Library, and history buff Johnny Altman will be making a presentation on the "100th Anniversary of the Great Hopewell Fire of December 9, 1915." The fire decimated the City of Hopewell. According to newspaper accounts at the time, 400 structures were destroyed with property loss estimated at $2 million. Ten thousand employees of the DuPont Powder Company were left homeless. Some suspected the fire was the work of a German spy sent to destroy the DuPont plant, which supplied gun cotton to the Allied troops in World War I. Luckily, the plant was not damaged by the fire.

At the lecture you will also have the opportunity to see photographs of the "The Wonder City Inferno." These images are courtesy of the Anne K. and Preston H. Leake Local History and Genealogy Room located in the headquarters building in the Appomattox Regional Library System, Hopewell, Virginia
