Upper school

From the Upper School Coordinators we wish you all a lovely summer. Hopefully your teens will have a chance to rest, renew, and have some interesting summer experiences.
Thank you to all the parents who served as chauffeurs, event planners, chefs, and cheerleaders throughout the year. It's been a great school year! We look forward to working with you again next year.
If you have any ideas for how to make the Upper School even better for 2014-2015 please let us know.
Wishing you a safe and joy filled summer.

McDowell's College Counseling Corner

In the spirit of keeping students on track in their march toward college, below you'll find a suggested summer "to do" list.
For rising seniors:
- Continue to research colleges. Aim to return to school in the fall with a solid list of schools to which you'll apply. Remember that your list should include a range of schools appropriate for YOU.
- Assess your standardized test situation. Have you taken the ACT or the SAT at least once? Should you retake one of these? Have you taken Subject Tests required by the colleges to which you'll apply? If you need to do any test-prepping, take time during the summer to review content and sharpen your test-taking skills.
- If you haven't already done so, create a Common Application account. Since the Common App shuts down for most of June and July, wait until August 1 or later that month to begin your Common Application.
- Draft a Common App essay. Writing prompts and details about length and format are available on the Common App website.
- Consider creating whatever else you might need for your applications. Will you need an activity resume, audition material, or supplemental essays?
For underclassmen:
- If you haven't already lined up something, plan to participate in at least one organized activity this summer. Work, volunteer, take a class, attend a camp. Such activities give you structure and purpose.
- Go on a college visit or two. If you go on vacation, visit a nearby school. If you're in town all summer, take a tour of a local campus.
- Log on to Naviance. There, you can research colleges, look up Harley-specific application data, explore career paths, and create an activity resume. Go to https://connection.naviance.com/harley. Your user name and password are the same: your first initial followed by your last name. My friend Irving Nerdlinger, for example, would log in as inerdlinger.
- Vow to prove yourself academically during the 2014-15 academic year. College admissions officers agree that a student's transcript is the most reliable predictor of college success. On that note, do your summer assignments-and do them well.

Last Day Lemonade
This is the end of the school year gathering to celebrate the joys of the closing school year. All Harley families are invited to grab a cookie and a glass of lemonade as they depart for summer recess. Say farewell to teachers, friends, and classmates on the last day of school.
For this event we ask for donations of a plate (dozen or two depending the size) of cookies. Choose your favorite kind!
Please let Jenna Wainwright know if you are able to donate cookies at [email protected]
Seabreeze Night
Get your tickets at the Main Office with Mrs. Kennelly or at athe Lower School Desk with Tammy Roberts. Tickets are $17.00

Return your Text Books
|
|
Middle and Upper school students,
Time to Track Down Those Textbooks!
This is probably a good time to seek out and account for your children's textbooks.
These may be squirreled away in odd places, and you may even find multiple copies.
These need to be returned this week, after exams, and or email inquiries as to their whereabouts may result.

Harley Library

Trisha Vanable worked very hard and we had the BEST BOOK FAIR EVER!
Barnes and Noble said it was one of the biggest book fairs they've ever had. At times the entire store felt like one big Harley School party, from teens having drinks in the caf to all of the families enjoying stories in the children's area.
The library earned more then NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS for new materials!!
Thanks to all volunteers, performers, faculty members, parents and to everyone who came by.
