2014 ULC Joey Rodger Leadership Award

The ULC Joey Rodger Leadership Award, in the amount of $5,000, provides a director or senior manager of a ULC member library with an opportunity to strengthen his/her skills through a structured professional development undertaking. The award may be used to attend an established leadership development program or pursue an individualized program that involves working with a leadership development expert/mentor. NYC Gathering to Focus on
Future Trends in Library Services

IMLS is hosting a gathering at the New York Public Library, NY, on Tuesday, April 29, from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm EST that will explore the emerging national digital platform, including key needs, gaps, opportunities and goals to consider in furthering national digital initiatives. The program can be accessed through live webcast. Tune-in for the live streaming.


IMLS Hearing on Broadband Access

A record number of ULC members are participating in the 2014 UL C Innovations Initiative! Submissions in ten categories, including Civic and Community Engagement, Leading Learning and Sustainability are currently under review. Top Innovators and Honorable Mentions will be announced in late June.

2016 IFLA to be Held in Columbus

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has selected Columbus, OH, as the site for its 2016 World Library and Information Congress to be held August 11-18, 2016 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Pat Losinski, Chief Executive Officer of Columbus Metropolitan Library says, "More than 4,000 library professionals from as many as 100 countries will be in Columbus, and I'm thrilled our region will be highlighted for its innovative, world-class public and academic libraries and acclaimed institutions of higher learning, arts, science and industry. This is a result of a community-wide effort by CML, Experience Columbus, The Ohio State University and OCLC to bring IFLA to central Ohio."


Chicago Redefined in the Digital Age

Tracking Numbers at Newport News

Newport News Public Library, VA, has introduced a new open-source software that allows staff to track and visualize data on circulation, patron registration, door counts, reference, acquisitions, instructor-led courses and more. According to Alexandria Payne, digital services manager, "We had a strong need to change the way that we did our data gathering in order to get better results and more visible outputs. It's a system-wide effort that probably affects every staff member. For that volume of work, we just felt that our 20-year legacy of spreadsheets wasn't cutting it anymore."
