By FRANK SAYLES JR.

Tifton Grapevine

The first week of 2014 was a frosty one, not only around the nation but in Tifton as well; on

Dick Marti captured this image of an 'ice tree' on Goff Street in Tifton.

Tuesday, Jan. 7, Tifton set a record low temperature for the date, shattering a 90-year-old record.

A low of 15.4 degrees was recorded Tuesday at the University of Georgia's Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton. The previous record low for Jan. 7 was 17 degrees set in 1924, according to National Weather Service records.

The high temperature in Tifton this past Tuesday was only 28 degrees. By the way, the Weather Service says the record high temperature for Jan. 7 is 80 degrees, set in 1934.

This week's frigid weather was the coldest in our area since Jan. 21 and 22 in 1985 when the temperature in Tifton plunged to a numbing 0 degrees on both days, according to Weather Service records.

Temperatures are slowly getting back to normal. The high on Saturday, Jan. 11, is expected to be in the 70s, making the past week's deep freeze just an icy memory.
