Farm News & Tom's Reflections
My Notebook - Walking the Land
Right now, as we approach the Summer Solstice, the farm is a continuously changing canvas of activity and fertile growth. I try to walk the land we farm every day, otherwise it's easy to miss things. In the coming days, if temperatures do climb into the 90's as predicted, several crops will need to be watched carefully since they will ripen and mature much faster. Green beans, still tiny right now, can double in size within a day, or some of the apricots, already turning orange in color but still hard to the touch, will most likely be ready to harvest. Crop & Field Notes
 First Potatoes...
Potatoes are one of my favorite crops to grow, and probably had something to do with my decision to start farming. When I joined the Peace Corps in Western Samoa (South Pacific 1985-1988), I worked with farmers used to growing upland-taro to try to plant and experiment with different varieties of potatoes. We are starting to harvest the earlier maturing Colorado Rose potatoes for our CSA shares this week. The tops are still green, but the tubers have sized up enough to start digging them. Over the next few months you will receive different varieties, both white and yellow fleshed, including Yellow Finn, Yukon Gold, and Fingerlings. Enjoy! Read more on our web site

Community Farm Day

Annual Summer Solstice Celebration
Saturday, June 21st 2:00 pm - dark
Every year our Summer Solstice Celebration is a wonderful expression of community celebrating the nourishing connection with the land and each other. We look forward to welcoming all members and friends to the Farm on Saturday the 21st starting at 2PM, to kick-off the Summer season. There is always lots to enjoy: Farm Tours; Strawberry, Raspberry, and, possibly, Apricot U-Picks; a straw bale-Climbing Fort; Visiting Goats, Horses and Chickens; Ice-cream making; Face Painting; Baking in the wood-fired cob-oven; a (small) Bonfire; Music by Kuzanga Marimba and the Banana Slugs. Don't Miss it! Mark your calendar, especially if you've never been to the farm, this is always a great event.

Summer Camps at Live Earth Farm
Live Earth Farm Discovery Program Summer Camps offer a unique opportunity to engage with the food the Farm grows. Camps are in depth field-to-fork experiences, each lasting a whole week. Campers get their hands dirty exploring pieces of the Farm's 150 acres, learning about life as an organic vegetable farmer, and discovering the benefits of humane livestock management by assisting with the daily chores caring for our goats and chickens. All of the summer camps include a Leader in Training program for teens. Scholarships are available. Learn more on our web site
