MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

December 1, 2015

From the President...

Well, Thanksgiving is upon us and hopefully you and yours had a nice holiday together.

As you have noticed, the weather has been unpredictable.  But despite that fact, MIC was fortunate to have a strong turnout from concerned citizens in the community in order to support our Adopt-A-Stream and Adopt-A-Mile projects before Thanksgiving.  This volunteer spirit is one of the many ways in which Mableton is such a special place to live and we at MIC are grateful for it.

On November 14th, under the guidance of our own Ron Raven, 13 people gathered together on a cold morning and went down to Nickajack Creek in order to pick up trash and debris.  At the end of the process, our volunteers were able to collect more than two dozen bags of trash and debris, which if not picked up, would have floated downstream into the Chattahoochee River, from which many Georgians obtain their drinking water.  Thanks to all of our volunteers and to Ron for leading us!

Then, a week later under the leadership of Dave McDaniel, 16 volunteers gathered in the Kroger parking lot to clean up the mile of Floyd Road that MIC has "adopted". Despite the chill in the air we collected 23 bags of trash. Thanks to all of our volunteers and to Dave for leading us!

Janis Stevenson, MIC's "Secret Santa", reports that over 90 children from the Boys & Girls Club will have presents this year from MIC members and friends. The matching process is still underway, so we will let you know the final outcome after the holiday. Your generosity is amazing and so much appreciated.

As always, feel free to give me a call or send me an email - I'm always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

Visit Cobb County Parks and Trails
During this holiday season, take some time with friends and family to get outside and  null go for a walk together or visit a nearby playground with the kids. Cobb County's trail network is growing, and the county has just released a new interactive trail map that details all the existing multipurpose trails in the county, along with those in the planning and construction stage.

Playgrounds are located in all these county parks in Mableton: Lions Park, Nickajack Park, Thompson Park, and Wallace Park. Additionally, Heritage Park has nearly 2 miles of walking paths along Nickajack Creek that lead to the ruins of the old woolen mill.

Zoning News
Coming up in December...
The Church of the Pentecost USA  is requesting rezoning for property located at  5606 Mableton Parkway , the old Wachovia/First Union Bank building. MIC has met with the church leadership and expressed our thoughts about the traffic flow into and out of the property, landscaping plans, and the condition of the parking lots. Additionally, the stand-alone drive-through banking structure should be demolished. This application was postponed from November, but is expected to be heard in December. The MIC Board voted to remain neutral in this application if these issues can be resolved.

Brilliant Automotive located at  700 Veterans Memorial Highway (SLUP-11) is requesting a continuation of their Special Land Use Permit for Used Car Sales, which expired on October 15th. The MIC Board voted to remain neutral in this application so long as the fencing along Lions Club Drive is removed and landscaping installed. MIC also recommends a 2-year duration for the permit.

Elite Auto Collision has filed a request to amend the stipulations for the property at 380 Veterans Memorial Highway, SE (OB-57) in order to allow for the operation of their auto body business. The MIC Board is gathering information about this application and will take a position before the Board of Commissioners hearing on December 15th.

The schedule for Commissioner Cupid's community zoning meetings has been changed due to the holidays. One meeting will be held for the District in December on Wednesday December 9th at 6pm at the South Cobb Recreation Center, 875 Six Flags Drive, Austell. Please plan to attend if you want  to learn more and have the opportunity to talk directly to the Commissioner about these zoning issues.
