TEXT CHAPTER 5: HEALING AND WHOLENESS
IV. The Voice for God

24 The Voice of the Holy Spirit does not command because it is incapable of arrogance. It does not demand because it does not seek control. It does not overcome because it does not attack. It merely reminds. It is compelling only because of what it reminds you of. It brings to your mind the other way, remaining quiet even in the midst of the turmoil you have made for yourselves. The Voice for God is always quiet because it speaks of peace. Yet peace is stronger than war because it heals. War is division, not increase. No one gains from strife.

1Today we will review the following:

[11] My meaningless thoughts are showing me a meaningless world.

2Since the thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything, the world which pictures them can have no meaning. What is producing this world is insane, and so is what it produces. Reality is not insane, and I have real thoughts as well as insane ones. I can therefore see a real world if I look to my real thoughts as my guide for seeing.

[12] I am upset because I see a meaningless world.

3Insane thoughts are upsetting. They produce a world in which there is no order anywhere. Only chaos rules a world which represents chaotic thinking, and chaos has no laws. I cannot live in peace in such a world. I am grateful that this world is not real and that I need not see it at all unless I choose to value it. And I do not choose to value what is totally insane and has no meaning.

[13] A meaningless world engenders fear.

4The totally insane engenders fear because it is completely undependable and offers no grounds for trust. Nothing in madness is dependable. It holds out no safety and no hope. But such a world is not real. I have given it the illusion of reality, and have suffered from my belief in it. Now I choose to withdraw this belief and place my trust in reality. In choosing this, I will escape all the effects of the world of fear because I am acknowledging that it does not exist.

[14] God did not create a meaningless world.

5How can a meaningless world exist if God did not create it? He is the Source of all meaning, and everything that is real is in His Mind. It is in my mind too because He created it with me. Why should I continue to suffer from the effects of my own insane thoughts when the perfection of creation is my home? Let me remember the power of my decision and recognize where I really abide.

[15] My thoughts are images which I have made.

6Whatever I see reflects my thoughts. It is my thoughts which tell me where I am and what I am. The fact that I see a world in which there is suffering and loss and death shows me that I am seeing only the representation of my insane thoughts and am not allowing my real thoughts to cast their beneficent light on what I see. Yet God's way is sure. The images I have made cannot prevail against Him because it is not my will that they do so. My will is His, and I will place no other gods before Him.

 Workbook Part I ~ Review I

<
GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER>

1Beginning with today, we will have a series of review periods. Each of them will cover five of the ideas already presented, starting with the first and ending with the fiftieth. There will be a few short comments after each of the ideas which you should consider in your review. In the practice periods, the exercises should be done as follows:

2Begin the day by reading the five ideas, with the comments included. Thereafter, it is not necessary to follow any particular order in considering them, though each one should be practiced at least once. Devote two minutes or more to each practice period, thinking about the idea and the related comments. Do this as often as possible during the day. If any one of the five ideas appeals to you more than the others, concentrate on that one. At the end of the day, however, be sure to review all of them once more.

3It is not necessary to cover the comments that follow each idea literally or thoroughly in the practice periods. Rather, try merely to emphasize the central point and think about it as part of your review of the idea to which it relates.

4The review exercises should be done with your eyes closed and when you are alone in a quiet place if possible. This is emphasized particularly for reviews at your stage of learning. It will be necessary, however, that you learn to require no special settings in which to apply what you have learned. You will need it most in situations which appear to be upsetting, rather than in those which already seem to be calm and quiet.

5The purpose of your learning is to enable you to bring the quiet with you and to heal distress and turmoil. This is not done by avoiding them and seeking a haven of isolation for yourself. You will yet learn that peace is part of you and requires only that you be there to embrace any situation in which you are. And finally you will learn that there is no limit to where you are, so that your peace is everywhere, as you are.

6You will note that for review purposes the ideas are not always given in quite their original form of statement. Use them as they are given here. It is not necessary to return to the original statements nor to apply the ideas as was suggested then. We are now emphasizing the relationships among the first fifty of the ideas we have covered and the cohesiveness of the thought system to which they are leading you.

 LESSON 53~ REVIEW I
[Review of Lesson 11-15]

We can never live in peace where chaos rules. And chaos is the nature of this world. It comes from chaotic thinking. It is our minds that have projected this whole chaotic world of insanity. Overriding these chaotic thoughts with positive affirmations about ourselves and the world is not the answer. We need to recognize how we have tried to adjust to this insane world and become conditioned to it putting our faith in the most "trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, 'protective' clothing, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the 'right' people, and an endless list of forms of nothingness that you endow with magical powers."(W.P.I.50.1.3)

As Jesus tells us, we have given illusions reality. We have given meaning and importance to the meaningless. We believe in the reality of this world and thus give it power to upset us. We do our best to live in peace in this world, but there can be no real peace in chaos. In our attempts at survival and happiness in the world, we manipulate and strategize how we might best exert some semblance of control over events, situations and people.

Now we are told that we can be grateful that this world is not real. (2.6) When we accept that we "cannot live in peace in such a world," (2.5) instead of continuing to try to adjust, we are given a way out. When we no longer choose to value it, we will escape its hold on us. It is such a relief to give up our efforts to depend on the undependable; to expect the world to be a place of fairness and justice; and to expect it to be a place of safety and hope. Yes, this can be preceded by a sense of disillusionment but Jesus does not leave us there. He shows us that our suffering has only come from our belief in the illusion. When we choose to withdraw any hope of happiness in the world, and instead place our trust in reality, then we will "escape all the effects of the world of fear," (3.8) because it is a world that does not exist. What that means is that I can choose to see the events that seem to cause me suffering as having no reality. I am no longer at the mercy of anything that seems to be happening to me. I can choose to see that the world is not the cause of my upsets but only the effect of my thoughts about it. Now the world has value to us only as a classroom for healing our minds. It is a matter of choosing. We are either making a choice for the ego or the Holy Spirit and our choice determines whether we continue to suffer or to experience peace.

"The fact that I see a world in which there is suffering and loss and death shows me that I am seeing only the representation of my insane thoughts, and I am not allowing my real thoughts to cast their beneficent light on what I see." (5.4) Any suffering I am experiencing today is caused by my own beliefs. But I can choose not to suffer by bringing these thoughts and beliefs to awareness.   So this meaningless world engenders fear because there is no safety or hope in madness. It is encouraging to know that these crazy images can't prevail forever and that we will all return home. Only our fear makes the journey seem long. Only our resistance to releasing the ego makes it seem hard. "The ego can accept the idea that return is necessary because it can so easily make the idea seem difficult. Yet the Holy Spirit tells you that even return is unnecessary, because what never happened cannot be difficult. However you can make the idea of return both necessary and difficult." (T.6.II.11)

Our thoughts are all over the map, narrating our experiences, crucifying ourselves for our mistakes, fantasizing about what we want in the world, holding grievances, planning and strategizing on how to address our problems. Our minds are never quiet. Our insane thoughts allow us no peace. That is why Jesus tells us that" insane thoughts are upsetting."(2.2) It is our insane thoughts that are the cause of this world. The world is a projection of those thoughts. That is why the world is insane as it is the effect of our insane thoughts. We have mistakenly thought that by working with the effects, that we can find some semblance of peace. But this will never work. We need to go back to the cause which is our own thoughts. Our minds are split between the wrong mind, where our insane thoughts originate, and our right minds which hold our real thoughts of peace and love. Only by looking at our insane thoughts in the wrong mind and bringing them to the love within can they be released. They are the thoughts that block the real world. We can experience this world when we release our wrong-minded insane thoughts. It is an inner world of peace and true harmony where we see the world of illusion for what it is. We see it from above this battleground where its unreality can only make us smile.

Healing is about bringing awareness to our thoughts. When something upsets us, it is just another opportunity for healing. Welcome it. When we don't resist what is showing up for us in the classroom of this world, then it becomes another opportunity for going to a deeper level of the mind where we can uncover the thoughts that keep us from peace. We can't heal what we don't see. Allowing these thoughts into awareness is for the purpose of bringing them to the light for healing. It is not just an experience to "get over" but one to really use to bring willingness and awareness to the insane thoughts in order to release them. Reality is not insane. The real world, seen through vision, is entirely sane. It reflects our right mind which is where truth resides.

We are now being shown that there is a direct connection between our thoughts and the world. The world is produced by our insane thoughts. That is the power of the mind. Our minds have the power to make a world that is in opposition to God. It is so important that we not deny this power. If we don't recognize the pain and suffering of the world, we will not be willing to take responsibility for our own minds as the cause. The world is not God's plan which demands that we see it as His creation and glorify the world instead of seeing it for what it is. The world is simply a reflection of the insane thoughts in our mind. And these thoughts keep us in misery. Even when they bring us what we think will make us happy in the world, it is not a happiness that will last. It is all dependent on external circumstances. "Yet God's way is sure." (5.5) Jesus is appealing to the power of our mind to choose to take responsibility for our thoughts instead of blaming people, events and circumstances 'out there' for our lack of peace.

Underneath our insane thoughts are the Thoughts of God. And it is only these thoughts that are real and sane. What are these Thoughts of God? They are the thoughts in our right mind. They are always there. We are incapable of separating ourselves from them although we can be unaware of them. What is the experience of our real thoughts? Jesus says that we enter into light; there is a deep sense of peace, however briefly;   we experience a deep sense of joy and increased alertness. (W.P.I. 44.47 and 74) So what is being said is that when we enter the realm of God's Thoughts is when we have the experience of love, holiness, peace, gratitude, oneness. In order to achieve this state, we need to approach our meditation time with desire, a sense of importance of what we are trying to achieve, and confidence that we will succeed. (W.P.I 45 and 49). We approach the experience as we would an altar. "My real thoughts are in my mind. I would like to find them."(W.PI.45.6.4-5) Then we sink past the unreal thoughts that cover the truth and listen in deep silence, sinking deeply into peace.

We simply can't overlay peace on our thoughts of worry, anger, distress. We can't force peace onto these thoughts. They have to be given over. We need to release these thoughts as they come up. We need to choose to give the thoughts up so that peace can take the place of the distress. It does take desire, commitment and willingness to do the work. It does take effort and determination, and it does take practice because of these monkey minds that constantly hold a wild array of wrong-minded thoughts. And it is this wild array of thoughts that torture our minds and keep us from everything that is real that is already in our right minds where truth abides in us. Only peace, love and joy are real. And it is only the power of my decision to choose, trust and do the practice that I will recognize where I really abide....in God.

So, instead of judging ourselves for the stuff that gets flushed up in our insane ego thought system, let's welcome the opportunity provided to look at these thoughts with equanimity. We can be happy that our long denied thought-system, based on guilt, is being brought to the forefront with every situation where we are upset. Each situation that comes up shows us the insanity of our thinking.   And now we can choose again to release these thoughts which block our joy and peace. Time was made for this and if we are to use it well, we will use time only for the healing of our mistaken beliefs. Now we can be grateful to all of those people, situations and events that come into our day, no matter how difficult the interaction may be, because it gives us another opportunity to see our hidden guilt and to choose healing.

Our thoughts are the only indicator of which mind is currently operating in us. They tell us "where we are and what we are." (5.3) And the lesson says that these thoughts simply "cannot prevail against Him because it is not my will that they do so." ( 5.6) I experienced that today when things weren't going my way and my response was one of anger which covered over the feelings of helplessness and frustration. I looked at the thoughts behind these feelings and had to honestly admit that my fear was that I did not have the control that I thought I should have. I realized how much I like to have control. Underneath the feelings of lack of control was fear and feelings of unworthiness. So going deeper into my mind really helped me to uncover something that I had kept hidden from my awareness. It is these dissociated thoughts and feelings that are projected on others around us and we blame them for what we are feeling rather than realizing it is our own dissociated thoughts projected out. I immediately felt the release once I had become honest with what was going on for me. Denial is our enemy. Awareness and willingness helps to set us free. It is only the meaning we give our thoughts that needs to be withdrawn. This opens us up again to the flow of love.

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Five

Healing and Wholeness

IV. The Voice for God

20 It is possible even in this world to hear only that Voice and no other. It takes effort and great willingness to learn. It is the final lesson that I learned, and God's Sons are as equal as learners as they are as Souls. The Voice of the Holy Spirit is the call to Atonement or the restoration of the integrity of the mind. When the Atonement is complete and the whole Sonship is healed, there will be no call to return, but what God creates is eternal. The Holy Spirit will remain with the Sons of God to bless their creations and keep them in the light of joy.

21 You are the Kingdom of Heaven, but you have let the belief in darkness enter your minds, and so you need a new light. The Holy Spirit is the radiance that you must let banish the idea of darkness. His is the glory before which dissociation falls away and the Kingdom of Heaven breaks through into its own. Before the separation you did not need guidance. You knew as you will know again, but as you do not know now. God does not guide because He can share only perfect knowledge. Guidance is evaluative because it implies that there is a right way and also a wrong way, one to be chosen and the other to be avoided. By choosing one, you give up the other.

22 This is a conflict state. It means that knowledge has been lost because knowledge is sure. God is not in you in a literal sense; you are part of Him. When you chose to leave Him, He gave you a Voice to speak for Him because He could no longer share His knowledge with you without hindrance. Direct communication was broken because you had made another voice through another will. The Holy Spirit calls you both to remember and to forget. You have chosen to be in a state of opposition in which opposites are possible. As a result, there are choices which you must make. In the holy state, the will is free in the sense that its creative power is unlimited, but choice itself is meaningless.

23 Freedom to choose is the same power as freedom to create, but its application is different. Choosing means divided will. The Holy Spirit is one way of choosing. This way is in you because there is also another way. God did not leave His Children comfortless, even though they chose to leave Him. The voice they put in their minds was not the voice of His Will for which the Holy Spirit speaks. The call to return is stronger than the call to depart, but it speaks in a different way.

25 "What profiteth it a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own Soul?" That means that if he listens to the wrong voice, he has lost sight of his Soul. He cannot lose it, but he can not know it. It is therefore lost to him until he chooses right. The Holy Spirit is your Guide in choosing. He is the part of your mind which always speaks for the right choice because He speaks for God. He is your remaining communication with God, which you can interrupt but cannot destroy.

26 The Holy Spirit is the way in which God's Will can be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Both Heaven and earth are in you because the call of both is in your will and therefore in your mind. The Voice for God comes from your own altars to Him. These altars are not things; they are devotions. Yet you have other devotions now. Your divided devotion has given you the two voices, and you must choose at which altar you will to serve. The call you answer now is an evaluation because it is a decision. The decision itself is very simple. It is made on the basis of which call is worth more to you.

27 My mind will always be like yours because we were created as equals. It was only my decision that gave me all power in Heaven and earth. My only gift to you is to help you make the same decision for yourself. The will for this decision is the will to share it because the decision itself is the decision to share. It is made by giving and is therefore the one act of mind that resembles true creation. You understand the role of "models" in the learning process and the importance of the models you value and choose to follow in determining what you will to learn. I am your model for decision. By deciding for God, I showed you that this decision can be made and that you can make it.

28 I promised you that the mind that made the decision for me is also in you and that you can let it change you just as it changed me. This mind is unequivocal because it hears only one voice and answers in only one way. You are the light of the world with me. Rest does not come from sleeping but from waking. The Holy Spirit is the call to awake and be glad. The world is very tired because it is the idea of weariness. Our task is the joyous one of waking it to the Call for God. Everyone will answer the Call of the Holy Spirit, or the Sonship cannot be as one. What better vocation could there be for any part of the Kingdom than to restore it to the perfect integration that can make it whole?

29 Hear only this through the Holy Spirit within you, and teach your brothers to listen as I am teaching you. When you are tempted by the wrong voice, call on me to remind you how to heal by sharing my decision and making it stronger. As we share this goal we increase its power to attract the whole Sonship and to bring it back into the Oneness in which it was created. Remember that "yoke" means "join together" and "burden" means "message." Let us reconsider the Biblical statement, "My yoke is easy and my burden light" in this way: "Let us join together, for my message is light."

30 I came into your minds because you had grown vaguely aware of the fact that there is another way or another Voice. Having given this invitation to the Holy Spirit, I could come to provide the model for how to think. Psychology has become the study of behavior, but no one denies the basic law that behavior is a response to motivation, and motivation is will. I have enjoined you to behave as I behaved, but we must respond to the same mind to do this. This mind is the Holy Spirit, whose will is for God always. He teaches you how to keep me as the model for your thought and to behave like me as a result.

31 The power of our joint motivation is beyond belief but not beyond accomplishment. What we can accomplish together has no limits because the Call for God is the call to the unlimited. Child of God, my message is for you to hear and give away as you answer the Holy Spirit within you.
