Looking For Safety Ambassadors
Waste collection workers have the fifth highest fatality rate in the United States. The injury/illness rate for waste collection workers is increasing and remains stubbornly high for MRF and landfill employees. In addition, there are daily accidents and frequent fires involving trucks and facilities.
SWANA is starting a "Safety Ambassador" initiative at the chapter level. Under this new initiative, SWANA chapters will identify at one or more members who will serve as the chapter's Safety Ambassador(s).
The purpose of this initiative is to:
  1. Create a chapter-level safety resource that members can go to with questions;
  2. Provide a person in the chapter who will receive and distribute safety-related information from SWANA HQ and the chapter;
  3. Demonstrate the renewed emphasis on safety at the chapter level at SWANA; and
  4. Create additional leadership opportunities at the chapter level.

What is SWANA's Young Professionals Group?

A "Young Professional" is defined as an individual in the solid waste industry 35 or younger.  That's actual age, not just how you feel.
 
We are a group of individuals who represent the future of the solid waste industry. We are passionate about the environment, our industry, and helping each other succeed. We are eager to offer advice, brainstorm ideas, develop solutions, and share in the struggles and triumphs of working in this business.

The Southern California SWANA Founding Chapter is pleased to announce April Hilario as the new Young Professional (YP) Chapter Representative. Ms. Hilario works as a Senior Associate with HF&H Consultants, where she specializes in solid waste analytical projects including competitive procurement's for new solid waste contracts, recycling contract management, financial modeling, and rate studies. She helps manage the used oil grant funds for the Coachella Valley Association of Governments which has seen a 600% increase in the recycling of used oil filters since 2007. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, and playing indoor volleyball. Ms. Hilario holds a M.A. in Economics from Cal State Fullerton and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from U.C. Riverside.

CalRecycle is hosting a public workshop in Southern California titled: California's Environmental Goals and Funding Waste Management Infrastructure.  Details and location information for the workshop is below. Additionally, please subscribe to the California's Environmental Goals and Funding Waste Management Infrastructure Listserv for updates and information about future workshops on this topic.
This workshop will focus on the state investment and partnerships needed to achieve California's 75 percent recycling goal while sustaining CalRecycle's ability to manage the handling of solid waste in California. Staff will present and seek feedback on potential funding mechanisms that support achieving the 75 percent recycling goal and provide sustainable funding as disposal fee revenue decreases.
