Music-COMP (Music Composition Online Mentoring Program) is sponsoring a summer workshop program for students entering grades five through twelve. We’ll offer two separate workshop sessions – one designed for beginners in grades 5-9 and another for advanced students in grades 7-12. If not sure of your level, contact Erik Nielsen to determine which group will suit you best. This collaboration with Burlington College’s Music in the Fields program will provide us with workshop/computer lab space and opportunities to interact with professional musicians. Students who have laptops with or without composition software or programs are welcome to bring them. When needed, others may use the Burlington College computers. There will be paper and pencil activities as well as the use of digital programs for composition.
Description of Beginner Group (grades 5-9) with Evan Premo:
This workshop will focus on the act of composing from a place of creativity and play. Students will practice composing from a number of entry points including arranging, improvisation, and text setting. Music theory basics will be covered as needed. Students will work individually and in groups on the compositions that will be performed at the end of the workshop. Note for Beginner Group: Please bring any instrument (or instruments) with which you feel most comfortable.
Advanced Group (grades 7 – 12) with Erik Nielsen:
During the week each student will create a new piece for a string ensemble. In addition, students will explore various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development.Completed works will be given a reading at al time TBA and possibly a performacne as part of Burlington College's Music in the Fields activities.
