Fiduciary Trust Company International Supports Brooklyn Generation School Seniors' College and Career Process 

On Tuesday, October 8th, volunteers from Fiduciary Trust Company International hosted thirteen Brooklyn Generation seniors and supported their efforts to refine their personal statements and complete their college application essays. Each professional paired up with a student, read their essay, asked clarifying questions, and helped them to tell their unique, personal story in a clear and compelling way. The Peak Readiness Event was timed just weeks before the students have to submit their college applications and personal essays, to ensure the students were ready to share and receive feedback, and best positioned to use the professional's feedback.

The time was transformational. As Mariah acknowledged "I didn't feel comfortable when we first got there. Everybody [who worked there] was dressed well and looked like they had nothing in common with me." Another student, Ellegance, added "I didn't know if I could trust them. How do I know if they care about my life? They didn't know me." Once the dozen or so employees joined the students, their bright smiles and effusive energy transformed the atmosphere of the room, from anxiety to engagement. Students who otherwise might have been disengaged from the college process now completely bought in to the possibility of going to and thriving in college. Students left with renewed hope and energy. "Everyone I met was so encouraging," Jessica beamed. "They made me feel like I could really succeed. I was hyped to go home to get started...I never wanted to rewrite an essay so badly before in my life."

First Rural Share Fair a HUGE Success!

Generation Schools Network and Battelle For Kids teamed up with the Morgridge Family Foundation to bring the first ever Share Fair to rural Colorado! Over 120 teachers from Southeast Colorado attended the event at Pueblo West High School, choosing between 14 different professional development sessions. Two of the sessions were presented by GSN staff members. Mary Cipollone and Kate Lister presented the session, Emotions Matter: Simple Strategies for Developing Heart Smart Students. Brittney Ames and Leslie Tjajadi presented a session: Designing Community Partnerships to Expand Learning. Ms. Cipollone and Ms.Tjajadi also kicked off the event with a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) exercise that got the audience to mingle with one another and create new connections. Overall, it was an incredibly successful day of teacher development!  Thank you Morgridge Family Foundation !!
Cincinnati Generation Academy Celebrates Successful Year Two Launch!  

Cincinnati Generation Academy has had an awesome start to its second school year. Under the guidance of a new principal, Danielle Bateman, and in a beautiful new facility, CGA is thriving with a student population of 136 high-needs students. Last year, Danielle served as the Kindergarten teacher and has always been a leader of the staff. She is currently completing her principal licensure program at Xavier University and is dedicated to leading the teachers and students toward a successful Ohio charter school. 

The school continues its partnership with Generation Schools Network, and its Implementation Manager, Katie Peyton, is spending the year coaching teachers in Blended Learning, Advocacy, and College and Career Readiness Intensive opportunities. GSN is excited about the future of CGA and what it offers to the students of Cincinnati.
Generation Schools Network Welcomes Three VISTAs and One VISTA Leader!

Please join Generation Schools Network in welcoming the first VISTAs provided through the AmeriCorps VISTA grant awarded to GSN by the Corporation for National and Community Service! On October 19th, we welcomed VISTA Leader Courtney Lancaster, and on November 5th we will be welcoming 3 more VISTAs. In  addition, GSN is proud to welcome Cassandra St-Cyr, a Brooklyn Generation School Alumna, who will be returning to BGS as a Corp member, as a part of the school's Community Schools effort.

And help support our VISTA members! We currently have one male VISTA looking to find affordable housing in Denver. Please let us know if you have a room to rent, know someone who does, or know of additional options!

Generation Schools Network Gathers for an Annual Staff Retreat

From September 21st to 23rd, Generation Schools Network staff and fellows gathered from New York, Ohio and Colorado at the GSN offices in Colorado for a 3 day staff retreat followed by the Rural Share Fair in Pueblo. The group spent time considering strategic questions, learning from the organization's work and problem-solving together. In fact, problem solving took on a whole new meaning as the group tackled the Clue Room. Yes, the staff holding up their fingers won!
