Program Spotlight: Family Literacy

After 50 hours of literacy instruction, our Hunter family literacy site has wrapped up for the school year. With 4 child instructors and 2 adult instructors, the program served 25 parents and 55 children. Of the 17 parents to complete the program:
  • 71% demonstrated significant gains in literacy skills on standardized assessments
  • 52% advanced the equivalent of a full literacy level
  • 100% reported obtaining at least one goal set at program entry
  • 52% reported an increase in the amount of time spent reading to their children at home
  • 70% reported an increase in the amount of time spent reading on their own
  • 71% reported an increase in their confidence upon completing the program
The Hunter Family Literacy Academy was a huge success! We're so proud of the progress these families have made. Spring sessions at the Ward Street United Methodist Church are scheduled to begin January 12th. The Program Coordinator, Neisha Washington, is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with this site. If you or anyone you know is interested please contact Neisha via email at [email protected].
Holiday Potlucks
The Reading Connections' Holiday potlucks had another deliciously successful year! This great tradition continued as tutors, students, family, and friends came together to enjoy a festive evening of sharing delicious food and celebrating togetherness in High Point and in Greensboro. What a great way to ring in the holiday season with our Reading Connections family! Thank you to all who were able to make this event a wonderful success. To those who were unable to attend, we will look forward to seeing you next year!

Detention Center Students Share
Their Favorite Holiday recipes

By Tiffany Kallam, Detention Center Coordinator

The following recipes began as a class assignment for our math class. As it developed it was simply an exercise on how to read, write directions and solve fraction problems; however, as we collectively shared our memories of home, mom, grandma and the holidays, we came to realize that it was much more than an exercise. The recipes are delicious dishes from the homes and memories of our students at the Detention Center.

Featured are an eclectic collection of side dishes to accompany the main holiday dish and rich, wondrous desserts. These recipes teach us as they are represented in a recipe, we are all connected as people of one world with one thing in common: a love for food and the memories of home during the holidays. From this seedling of commonality we can grow love, respect, and an admiration for other people; and one day sit together peacefully at a table breaking the bread of world brotherhood and sisterhood. Enjoy the food!
