A Message From Michelle

In considering a message for the month of November, how can I possibly not pause and reflect on the significance of a day set aside deliberately for the purpose of being thankful.  A day that should not be taken for granted and one that in our home is filled with "family, food and football"!

It's that day that is truly without pretense; no trees to adorn, no lights to untangle, and the only gift to give is the presence enjoyed by one another.

My Thanksgiving memories are filled with thoughts of waking to the smells of pies baking and mom doing exactly what she loved best; preparing food for her family.  We have a longstanding tradition here at Pickering of bringing that presence of family to our residents the week before Thanksgiving.

Our residents, their families and our staff join and we celebrate together that spirit of gratitude for each other....and we reminisce about those family memories; those iconic football games and the hope of so many more Thanksgivings to come!

Pickering Manor Begins Music and Memory Program
Pickering Manor staff and volunteers are working together to bring a special program to life for our residents. Music and Memory is a program that taps into each person's deep rooted love of music.  It's about bringing joy to the lives of people suffering from Alzheimer's, other forms of dementia and a wide range of cognitive and physical impairments.  Pickering Manor, the only community-owned and operated non-profit senior residence in Newtown, has joined with Music and Memory to train staff how to set up personalized music playlists on ipods for residents.  These musical favorites tap deep memories not lost to dementia and can "reawaken" residents, enabling them to feel like themselves again, converse, socialize and stay present.

In order for Pickering Manor to offer this program, the facility is in need of ipods and itunes gift cards to give to each of their 70+ long term care residents. Pickering Manor is in the process of becoming a Music and Memory Certified Care Facility.

If you would like to donate your gently used ipod shuffle or an itunes gift card, please drop off at Pickering Manor's front desk.  If you can make a monetary donation, please contact Susan DeLuca, Director of Development at [email protected], or 215-968-3878.
