Empowering Community Health Organizations (E.C.H.O.) Workshop
"Mental Health in Our Communities"

On May 21st, AAHI partnered with the African American Health Program and Latino Health Initiative to host the "Mental Health in Our Communities" workshop. This was the seventh workshop in our E.C.H.O. Project, which provides practical and professional training workshops aimed to build the capacity and sustainability of community organizations.

The workshop was led by the Manager of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Access to Behavioral Health, who gave a presentation on mental health, a typical encounter with a mental health professional, and local support services. In addition, there was a group exercise on mental health case scenarios and a brief question and answer session.

We were excited to host a full house of 100 attendees, representing about 43 organizations from the community. Thank you to our speaker, attendees, Steering Committee, Health Promoters, volunteers, and staff for making this a successful night. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our fall E.C.H.O. workshop!

Photos from the workshop can be viewed on our community blog. Please click here to read the workshop summary (14.6 MB).

Exciting Changes for AAHI in Fiscal Year 2015!

Mental health has been an ongoing concern in the Asian American community due to the several disparities that exist. According to the Office of Minority Health, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Asian Americans, with older Asian American women having the highest suicide rate of all women over age 65 in the United States. The National Alliance on Mental Illness also notes that Asian Americans have significantly lower mental health service utilization rates due to cultural values and stigma.

We are excited to share that after the AAHI Steering Committee diligently raised these concerns with the County's elected officials and policymakers, the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services received $100,000 to devote to education in the Asian American community on recognizing mental health symptoms and accessing support services. Thank you to our Steering Committee for your outstanding efforts and contributions to the community in FY14!

If you would like to help make a difference in the Asian American community, come join AAHI's Health Promoter team or Steering Committee!
