Dear Valued Members & Supporters,

We are so thankful for your support as we have completed our move to 1401 Kearns Boulevard.  There were so many new faces that joined us at our Grand Opening & ARToberFest on Saturday, October 24th which leads us to belive that our future is indeed very bright.

If you have not had the opportunity to visit us yet, we hope that you will take the time to explore our new exhibition and studio spaces.  We'd love to see you!

Live PC Give PC
Upcoming Events

This Friday, November 6, 2015, the Kimball Art Center is participating as a receiving organization in the annual Live PC Give PC!

We hope that the community will join in on our excitement for the next phase of the Kimball Art Center.  All proceeds received from the Live PC Give PC community event go towards student programming, exhibitions and events brought to the community by the Kimball Art Center.

Current Exhibition

Our first exhibition at our 1401 Kearns Boulevard location is "Picturing the Iconic: Andy Warhol to Kara Walker."

This exhibit features 90 works loaned from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and The Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation and is co-curated by the Art Museum of Sonoma County, CA. It is a selection of contemporary art selected around the concept of "the iconic."

This exhibition highlights how artists use iconic images to elicit the viewers' sense of nostalgia, cultural understanding or a preconceived content. Whether it is the elevation of the ordinary as in Chuck Close's portraits of President Obama and Brad Pitt, the exhibition features major currents in art while exploring a single topic.

It includes works from well-know contemporary artists like John Baldessari, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Kiki Smith, Barbara Kruger, and of course Andy Warhol and Kara Walker.

Education Update

EVA (Elementary Visual Art) program: The November EVA lesson focuses on the Giant Kites of Guatemala.  This lesson introduces these giant kites which are an element of Day of the Dead observances in two highland villages north of Antigua, Guatemala.  Students will learn about the cultural significance of this Mayan tradition and can make a children's version of the kite that comes in a kit made by Guatemalan kite makers. Additionally, in the process of making the kite, students can learn about shape, rhythm, color, radial balance, Spanish language vocabulary and interpreting explicit and implicit cultural messages. These kites will be used in our first all EVA school Kite Flying Day on Monday, November 16th!  This all EVA school event will occur from 2:15 - 2:45pm. Parents are welcome to come and enjoy kite flying festivities! Afterwards students can take their kites home. Many thanks to the principals who were able to secure this date for students.

ARTS (Academic Resources for Teachers and Students) School Program: This program offers an in-depth tour of our current exhibitions followed by an art lesson at the Kimball Art Center or at various schools throughout the Wasatch Front. Tours for our "Picturing the Iconic" exhibition are just beginning with over 1,900 students from over 15 schools scheduled to date. Students get an introduction to Pop-Art during a tour of our current exhibit followed by the opportunity to learn firsthand about reproduction by creating their own pop-culture wood cut prints.

Young Artists' Academy (YAA): Students recently completed a four-part installation at Lululemon on Main Street focusing on natural elements during their creations.  Come see their work for yourself! YAA members are in the midst of lessons that expose them to various mediums such as a session with a guest illustrator and are looking forward to printmaking, collage work and ceramics!

KAC Art Classes: Classes have officially relocated to our new studios at 1401 Kearns Boulevard. Ceramics, Glass Fusion and Metalsmithing classes will remain at the 638 Park Avenue location until further notice. Please visit our art class webpage for details on upcoming classes and workshops.
