EVA (Elementary Visual Art) program: The November EVA lesson focuses on the Giant Kites of Guatemala. This lesson introduces these giant kites which are an element of Day of the Dead observances in two highland villages north of Antigua, Guatemala. Students will learn about the cultural significance of this Mayan tradition and can make a children's version of the kite that comes in a kit made by Guatemalan kite makers. Additionally, in the process of making the kite, students can learn about shape, rhythm, color, radial balance, Spanish language vocabulary and interpreting explicit and implicit cultural messages. These kites will be used in our first all EVA school Kite Flying Day on Monday, November 16th! This all EVA school event will occur from 2:15 - 2:45pm. Parents are welcome to come and enjoy kite flying festivities! Afterwards students can take their kites home. Many thanks to the principals who were able to secure this date for students.
ARTS (Academic Resources for Teachers and Students) School Program: This program offers an in-depth tour of our current exhibitions followed by an art lesson at the Kimball Art Center or at various schools throughout the Wasatch Front. Tours for our "Picturing the Iconic" exhibition are just beginning with over 1,900 students from over 15 schools scheduled to date. Students get an introduction to Pop-Art during a tour of our current exhibit followed by the opportunity to learn firsthand about reproduction by creating their own pop-culture wood cut prints.
Young Artists' Academy (YAA): Students recently completed a four-part installation at Lululemon on Main Street focusing on natural elements during their creations. Come see their work for yourself! YAA members are in the midst of lessons that expose them to various mediums such as a session with a guest illustrator and are looking forward to printmaking, collage work and ceramics!
