November 2 015
News from the Crew

November is the month to give thanks.  A Thank You seems so small for everything MABTR's volunteers, fosters, donors and adoptors do for us that allow us to continue our mission.
We have the highest appreciation for all of you!

October had its challenging for MABTR but also successes.

On Oct 14 MABTR received a credit card bill of $11,923.63 for the previous month's charges that we needed to have paid off by Oct 23 to avoid interest. Unfortunately as of Oct 14th we only had $5,273.34 in the bank.

MABTR prides itself on the ability to raise funds to cover our monthly expenses without having to incur any interest.

On Oct 16 MABTR raised 100% of the funds needed plus a positive balance of $780.81 in the bank.

On Oct 17 MABTR had a rep attend a puppy mill auction in MO to bid on 38 bostons (ages ranging from 10 weeks to 10 years old). There were 189 dogs up for bid at the auction that day.

We did our best to save them all but unfortunately we do have a top bid per head and were bidding against breeders that had an agenda for these dogs.

We did however save 26 lives on Oct 17 from landing in the hands of another breeder that would continue the vicious cycle of life in a wire cage for the sole purpose of breeding.
One of the bostons we saved was a 10 year old female that we had to pay a breeder for just to get her out.  Yes 10 years old.  So remember this when you are shopping for your next four legged friend what life the parents are living.

Volunteers came together to help move the 26 bostons to the Kansas City, MO area where we had enough foster homes lined up to take them all in.

Medical bills started to pile on as we started to treat these dogs for urinary tract infections, ear infections, nasal obstruction repair, dentals, altering, heartworm testing, shots, and colds.

Our HIGH F$VE efforts continued that brought in 3,177.50 to help with the medical needs and additional expenses of the auction dogs.

On behalf of all the rescued Animals - THANK YOU!

Adoptable Dog of the Month

My name is Weezie.   I am 7.5 years old and weigh 21 pounds. I need a new home because I was purchased at a puppy mill auction. I am being fostered in Omaha, NE.

I am a very sweet little girl but also very shy. I need a family that has time and patience. I tend to find that one person in the house to love on and trust. I have lots to learn and need to first trust and get comfortable in my new surroundings and then you will see the love bug in me.

~*~Eligible for the Golden Paws Program!!!~*~

Adopters 60 yrs and older adopting a dog 7 yrs and older get $50 off the adoption fee !!!

Ask Jennifer

Q:  My Boston vomits often.  What's wrong?  What can I do?

AA couple of things could be going on...

  • Elongated Palate - The collapse of the flap of mucousal tissue which closes off the animal's airway during swallowing to prevent food and liquids from going into their lungs.  Another symptom of this disorder is breathing problems and snorting.
    • Some dogs require surgery. Consult with your vet to determine what is best for your dog. Surgery can make a world of difference for your dog
    • Recommend watering down the dog food.  Soak in water overnight
    • Elevate the food and water dish. Consider placing the bowls on a step stool or cat litter box
    • Feed small amounts multiple times a day instead of two full meals
  • Megaesophagus - muscles of the esophagus fail and it cannot propel food or water into the stomach
    • Surgery is not available to correct
    • A low-fat or low residue softened food to be fed either in a milkshake consistency or in "meatballs" works best
    • Feed small amounts multiple times a day instead of two full meals
    • Elevate the food and water dish. Consider placing the bowls on a step stool or cat litter box
    • Medications may include an acid reducer like Pepcid-AC 1 or 2 times per day (consult your vet for the dosage)
Alumni Feature - Pepper
"We had put an adoption application in, and interviewed for a couple dogs, but foster moms and I both agreed they just weren't the right fit for our house. Right as I started to get discouraged, I got a call about a sweet 9 month old little girl described as 'perfectly sweet, gentle, adorable, and not like other Bostons as she was so calm.'  I was told that I had to meet this little girl.  An hour and a half later, I met my very best friend.

You know how some things you feel were made just especially for you? That's how I feel about our Pepper girl.  I feel like she was born to be in our family.  She had been in 2 homes in her short 9 months on the earth, but when we met I think it was a mutual feeling she was ours.  When we brought her home, she was very well behaved and sweet.  She loved her new brother, but she wasn't sure what all this affection was all about.

Fast forward a year and a half, she is the most loving, affectionate dog I have ever seen.  She loves getting kisses, and loves to give them even more!!  She loves laying with her daddy, and snuggling into a big pile of warm laundry.  She has the sweetest little squishy face, and most funny smile.  She loves to frolic while she chases squirrels & birds.  Her most favorite thing is sunbathing, and being outside smelling the fresh air.

She sleeps right between my husband and I every night, and whenever I hear her nightly deep breathe & exhale when she is settled in her spot between us it makes my heart happy.  That to me is a sign of a happy, content and loved baby.

She has brought so much joy into our family, and we could not imagine our life without her.  What an honor it is to be her Forever for the rest of her precious life."

2,797 Bostons rescued to date!

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.
