Courthouse Canines
Wednesday, 12/9
6:30 - 7:30

With roots in our partnership with the Cecil County Department of Social Services and their child advocacy program, our Courthouse Canines program was developed to provide trained and certified pet therapy teams to assist children going through the court process.

PAWS' Courthouse Canines teams may be called in to visit with children, offering comfort and diversion to the victims and their families, including during emotionally-charged testimony.
Come learn about
- the client population at both the Child Advocacy Center and the courthouse,
-  types of abuse and the short and long-term effects on children and their families, and
- the expectations of the pet therapy team during courthouse/courtroom procedures.

Making Connections with PAWS

Shawn & Enzo Mathiesen, PAWS Therapy Team
"Something really cool happened today at Dover Behavioral Health during my visit there with Enzo.

"A young women (a teenager) was there during my last two visits with Enzo. She just loved Enzo and smiled so much as she pet Enzo who sat on her lap. Today this young lady told me she was going home tomorrow and that she and her family are going to get their dog certified to do pet therapy. She said Enzo's visits have been so good for her and have helped so much to calm her anxiety. She wants to do the same for other people with her dog. Wow!"

- Shawn Mathiesen, PAWS member

PAWS Fall Interns
PAWS is very lucky this fall to have the opportunity to host a full-time intern from West Chester University, Deanna Brooks, and 5 part-time interns from the University of Delaware, Sophie Drossman, Max Cui, Rysa Bell, Mike DeVito, and Olivia Ulibarri.  Everyone has already started working on specific projects in the office and each intern will be shadowing at least 3 of our pet therapy teams in the field so they can see firsthand what pet therapy is really about.

PAWS loves the chance to teach more people about the power of pet therapy and having interns to assist staff members, write programs, and provide us with a youthful energy and spirit is a gift.

Here are pictures of Max and Rysa (with Sundance). Pictures of the other interns to come!

2-Hand Hold: Not Just for Visiting
Oliver, Susan Warren's therapy companion, has been busy loving his human while she recovers from the "incident."
Susan Warren, a PAWS member, recently shared the following cautionary tale.

"At Training, it was mentioned that one of your members was so used to the 2-hand hold that she could even drink a glass of wine while holding her dog's leash with 2 hands.

"I am now aware of the consequences of not using the 2-hand hold: With my cell phone in one hand and Oliver's leash in the other and walking in the dark, I hurried to the pavement. Oliver quickly cut across me from left to right and I fell on my left side. With scrapes and bruises to my arm, elbow, and hip, I am recovering from bruised/cracked ribs.  I now will use the 2-hand hold!!"

Shining Stars: Joan & Chessie Klockars
Joan Klockars and her English Golden, Chessie (pictured ready for the first game of the World Series with her dad), joined PAWS in July of this year. They currently visit adults with disabilities at the Chesapeake Care Resources: Lokey Center. Chessie and Joan are both wonderful with the residents they visit. To show their appreciation, the residents of Lokey created a poster dedicated to Chessie, which is now hanging above her doggie bed at home.
