Crop & Field Notes

It can't be rushed!

Most of our crops are raised from seed in a greenhouse. The moment a seed is sown the clock starts ticking. Field preparations need to be timed so as to overlap with the maturity of the seedlings and the farm's planting schedule. Right now, the greenhouses are filled with thousands of plants waiting to be transplanted into the fields.  Spring may enchant with the promise of flowers and new growth but no matter how beautiful the apricot blossoms or lush the tomato plants, we need to be patient and provide the nurturing care that's needed before we can harvest the nourishing bounty of summer.  Farmer Denesse Willey of T&D Willey Farms says it so well in one of my favorite quotes:  "To plant a seed and believe that it will germinate, out-compete weeds, bloom, set fruit, and be harvested and sold at a fair price is a great leap of faith."

Organic Rising - A Worthy Cause to Support

Last year in late Spring, Anthony Suau, a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, stopped by the Farm on an assignment to document and experience first hand the work of organic farmers in this country.  Mr. Suau has released ORGANIC RISING, a video summarizing what he's documented up to this point. The next phase is to produce a full-length educational documentary of how Organic Farming is creating a more abundant and nutritious food supply where consumers and farmers participate in creating a sustainable food system.  I encourage everyone to make this promising endeavor a success by sharing the video and donating.   Check out the video and see if you recognize some familiar Live Earth Farm sites and faces!

Discovery Program - Give Local America

On May 6th, 2013 starting at 9:30 am, The Live Earth Farm Discovery Program will host a garden work party in celebration of Give Local America and the end of the 2014 Spring Fund Drive. Give Local America is a national day of community giving. LEFDP staff will cook volunteers a pizza lunch in our cob oven in gratitude for the many ways the community gives to LEFDP. The Discovery Program needs to raise $4500 more to provide scholarships to bring kids to the farm to learn to grow and choose food that is healthy for themselves, for their community and for the environment.
