Letter from Laurie
______________________________________________________________________

Dear Friend,

There is an issue that I would like to bring to light, this being the crisis of rampant violence and crime that plagues our youth. I attribute this to the lack of positive programs and activities for our young men and women. Though we have made strides to address this problem, I know that much more needs to be done to empower our youth to make the right decisions for their lives. It takes a village to raise a child; and therefore the support of local residents, small business owners, non-profit institutions is vital to the creation of opportunities for our future leaders.

One of the many victories in the City's budget for Fiscal Year 2015 is the allocation of $17 million to fund NYCHA community and senior centers throughout New York City. In addition, community residents will benefit from the extended hours of these centers, which will remain open until 11pm, 7 days a week, over the course of the summer.

An organization known as University Settlement, whose mantra includes "to strengthen a community, you must strengthen families," is a great example of the synergy that is required to further develop our community. In order to realize the full potential of their two community centers in my district, to provide underprivileged youth and families with a safe environment for recreational activities, we need your support.

Your participation would be a tremendous boost for our initiative to preserve our youth if you are a part of a community-based organizations that would like to assist in coordinating activities for Brooklyn residents, please contact my office at (718) 260-9191 to join this coalition to empower the future of our community- our youth.

I hope that you will continue to engage with my office, exchanging ideas and solutions to improve our district, city, and state.

Yours in Partnership,

Laurie A. Cumbo

Member of the New York City Council

Upcoming Press Conference on Boss Bill
Less than one week before our nation celebrated its 238th independence, the Supreme Court announced its ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, in which Hobby Lobby, a national chain of hobby and craft stores operating in New York, won the right to deny contraceptive coverage to employees in its healthcare plan, arguing that the mandated coverage violated the company's personal views. History has repeated itself and once again, a woman's right to choose was overruled.

As Chair of the New York City Council Women's Issues Committee, Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo said, "Enough is enough." The rights of women is not debatable, it is not up for discussion. It is unfathomable that in the 21st Century, that the fight to preserve equal access and coverage continues.

On Tuesday July 15, 2014 at noon, on the steps of City Hall, Council Member Cumbo, New York State Senator Liz Krueger, and a diverse group of advocates and fellow elected leaders will call for the passage of the "Boss Bill" (A.8769A/S.6578B), which would strengthen current workplace anti-discrimination laws in New York State, protecting employees' rights to access reproductive healthcare and services free from employer retaliation. The bill, sponsored by Senator Krueger and Assemblymember Ellen Jaffee, was passed with bipartisan support in the Assembly during the final week of the legislative session, but was not given a vote by the State Senate. Council Member Cumbo will introduce a City Council resolution calling for passage of the Boss Bill.

Take a tour of Brooklyn's Stuyvesant North with the Municipal Art Society of New York
4PM
The neighborhood of Stuyvesant Heights was developed mostly between 1880 and 1900. In those twenty years, blocks and blocks of exceptional upper and middle class speculative housing was built, consisting of brownstone, limestone and brick row houses. Small apartment and storefront flats buildings were built on the commercial avenues. This community was soon filled with fine churches, shopping and restaurant blocks, and civic buildings. Today the area roughly between Halsey St and Madison Streets, Throop and Malcolm X is a proposed historic district called Stuyvesant North. Our tour will explore the area, looking at the fine architecture and history of the neighborhood, highlighting its worthiness for landmarking. Some of Brooklyn's finest architects put their mark on these blocks. The tour will be led by Suzanne Spellen, writer and architectural historian, aka columnist "Montrose Morris" on Brownstoner.com, and Morgan Munsey, architect, historian, and expert on the architecture of Bedford Stuyvesant.
