Students Return to Campus

The campus is again filled with students for the Fall semester.  Fifty-three new students arrived on July 29, and the majority of returning students arrived on August 4. This year's student body is one of our largest ever.Registration Day  Classes began on Monday, August 5, and Dr. Doug Dalglish and Mrs. Perez welcomed students in a Convocation ceremony.

Each new student was presented with a bilingual Bible published in English, along with his or her native language.  Whether in weekly worship and chapel services, in Bible class, or in the prayer and Bible study groups that form in the dorms, students can comprehend God's word in their own native tongue, while simultaneously working on improving their command of English.

The girls in the dorm are learning the ins and outs of what it takes to start and manage a successful business.  Good old-fashioned supply and demand and a desire by the Social Committee to serve others and glorify God was the catalyst for what has grown into the Corner Store and Caf located in the common area of the Girls' Dorm. Ms. Tamra Ellsworth, Girls' Dorm Director, used to keep a small supply of snacks that the girls in the dorm frequently requested, especially during those times when you just want something a little indulgent.

The result is the newly formed social enterprise staffed by twenty-seven Pan Am students under the guidance of Ms. Ellsworth. The dream was realized because of the initial support from board members Marcia Hinojosa and Patricia Payan who believe in the girls' ability to sustain an ongoing service to the Pan Am community while learning so much throughout the entire process.

The student volunteers who staff the store and caf are learning about sales, customer service, inventory control, merchandising and business operations.   Leaders among the student volunteers assign managers and team members to open, close, oversee and clean the store. The caf and store are open during certain hours each Tuesday through Saturday that include times that are available to all students, faculty and staff.   In addition to specialty coffee and tea drinks, other menu items include soup, ethnic foods, popcorn, salads, and sausage wraps.

All proceeds generated by sales are designated to support PPAS student programs and activities.  In fact, each day's beneficiary changes and is posted so customers are aware of what their purchase supports. In addition to tasty treats that provide a much needed boost of energy for studying or to enjoy while watching a movie, student volunteers are also learning valuable skills that will serve them well long after graduating from Pan Am.

The next time you're on campus, make a point to stop by the Corner Store and Caf. Your first drink is free!
