NAMI Otsego President Ginnah Howard Publishes
I'm Sick of This Already: At-Risk Learning in a High School Class

I'm Sick of This Already: At-Risk Learning in a High School Class  by Ginnah Howard is about a year of working with a group of students in upstate New York who need intensive remediation in reading and writing. Synopsis: It's the first day of school at Stanton Central High. The teacher stands by the door as ready as she's going to be. The 6B Improvement of Language Skills class bursts in: "I'm hungry"... "I hate English" ... "I'm sick of this already."  And so the new year begins. We will be with them for two semesters and we will get to know them all. Many of us will come to care about all of them and be sad when some of them run away or get arrested or become pregnant. We'll understand why this teacher is relieved when Stan and Mike are both absent on a subzero Monday in the middle of February. Lots of days, we'll give her a gold star for her efforts.

Ginnah Howard won the NAMI NYS Media Award in 2009.

The book will also be sold at the 2015 NAMI-NYS Education Conference where Ginnah will be doing a signing.

NAMI-NYS Presents at
NYS Library Association Conference

On Friday, October 23rd, 2015 NAMI-NYS Executive Director Wendy Burch and NAMI-NYS Programs Coordinator Shaniqua Jackson had the honor of presenting at the New York State Library Association Annual Conference in Lake Placid, NY.

NAMI-NYS was contacted during the summer to help support and educate the library staff across NY when faced with difficult situations with patrons of the libraries. We were able to present on "The Mental Health Challenge: Moving from Stigma to Support." This was an opportunity for them to learn tips on how to de-escalate a situation as well as begin the important conversation among staff.

Following the presentation, the floor was open for  Q&A and it was moving to hear how much of an impact we made throughout the room. NAMI-NYS would like to thank those who attended and we are looking forward to the lasting connections we made.

SUNY Oneonta Looking to Form
NAMI on Campus Club

SUNY Oneonta students are currently working to form a NAMI club on campus this semester. With over 100 interested students, the project is very successful so far. Two events have been held on campus and students have been volunteering to help out through NAMI on campus. Although the club is not an official club recognized by the school, the founders are meeting with school officials to make this possible. Dr. Stephanie Poplock, Steven Doolittle, Alexandra Fields, and Lupe Colangelo are working with students to make the club personalized to the Oneonta campus. The goals of College NAMI are to reduce the stigma of mental illness on campus and to create a safe and accepting place for anyone affected by or interested in mental illness.

The Young Adult track of the 2015 NAMI-NYS Education Conference will feature a session on NAMI on Campus clubs.

There is still time to apply for a Young Adult scholarship.

NAMI and Leading Mental Health Organizations Call on ABC-TV to Drop Halloween Episode
of Modern Family

Stigma Violates TV Network's Own
Anti-Bullying Campaign

NAMI and five other of the nation's leading mental health organizations have joined in calling on ABC-TV to drop the episode of "Modern Family" which aired on Wednesday October 28th. The Halloween episode mocks and stigmatizes people with mental health conditions.

NAMI was joined by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the Bazelon Center on Mental Health Law, the  Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), Mental Health America (MHA), and the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS), Inc. The letter includes the observation that the episode violates ABC-TV's own code of Corporate Citizenship and Social Responsibility and that one of the television network's own partners in a current anti-bullying campaign has itself called for an end to the stigma that surrounds mental illness.

Thousands Of Soldiers With Mental Health Disorders Kicked Out For 'Misconduct'

This week, National Public Radio detailed the findings of an investigation they conducted with Colorado Public radio which concludes that the U.S. Army has kicked out more than 22,000 soldiers since 2009 for "misconduct," after they returned from Iraq and Afghanistan and were diagnosed with mental health disorders and traumatic brain injuries. That means many of those soldiers are not receiving the crucial treatment or retirement and health care benefits they would have received with an honorable discharge. Click here to read more.
