 Principal's Corner
As we get closer to our testing dates in March (3/9-3/13), I want to highlight some important reminders for students and parents:
1. All students are expected to attend school every day during the testing week! It's the law.
2. Teachers will be giving graded assignments during that week.
3. AP classes will take advantage of this opportunity to administer mock exams.
3. For seniors who are under 92% attendance and in jeopardy of not walking at graduation, there will be
attendance forgiveness during the testing week. Each day attended is worth 5 class periods.
4. When testing, no one may leave once the session starts. The sessions are 90 minutes long. Student should bring reading material for any remaining time.
5. All electronics will be collected. No exceptions, no excuses.
For Parents and Community Members:
Please remember: weeks like this are critical to our continued improvement as a school. Thanks in advance for your commitment to having your student attend each and every day. These are the things that will take us from Good to Great!

The DPS Foundation has granted A-Z Funds for 13 Spartans to participate in a GT Celebration Night. High School GT Student Celebrations Night Friday April 24:
With the backdrop of the Denver Center Theater's performance of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" as our main event, gifted High School upperclassmen will enjoy an evening of socialization and celebrations of all their high school achievements - academic, athletic, artistic and otherwise. Steeped in the wonders of ancient Egypt, students will have a chance to share and discuss their college and career plans, ideas about their upcoming senior year, and to celebrate and bridge into their young adulthoods with like peers and mutual recognition.

Saturday school will be held on February 28th from 8am to noon in the TJ library. All students need to check the lists out in the hall to see if they are on the list. Seniors who have attendance rates under 92% need to come in to Saturday school or AP study sessions so that they can make up time. Seniors will get 5 periods back for each full Saturday school or AP study session that they attend.

Fees for AP Courses need to be paid to the treasurer by March 6. Parents should have received a letter from Mike Christoff notifying them of fees and potential fee reductions applicable for their students.

STEM Opportunity for Girls
|
Montana Tech University offers an on-campus summer camp for high school sophomore and junior girls to explore exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers through hands-on experiments, lab-based activities, and interactions with professors and STEM professionals. More information about the MINES program is attached and also available online.

Coach Grant Laman recently celebrated the milestone of earning his 200th win.
When Spartan basketball player Grant Laman graduated from TJ in 1991, he had no idea that he would soon be back at TJ teaching, coaching basketball and winning 200 games as the varsity head coach. Laman received his Journalism degree and continued playing basketball at University of Northern Colorado (UNC). After graduating from UNC, Laman became interested in the idea of coaching basketball and working at TJ. He got his substitute teaching license, and began substitute teaching at TJ in 2000. This turned into a long-term assignment that led him to becoming a full-time teacher and boys' basketball coach at TJ.

FormSwift Scholarship for College Students
Due- 4/30/15
Amount- $1,000
Either Write a One-Page Business Plan, Make a Brief PowerPoint, or Make a Two-Minute Video about one of the following topics for a chance to win the FormSwift Scholarship:

Denver Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships accessible to DPS students interested in attending non-profit, Colorado colleges/universities. Students must meet the following conditions to qualify:
- Must be a graduate of DPS and have attended DPS high school all four years
- Must have applied to three other scholarships
- Demonstrate financial need (DACA students will need to show proof of Free and Reduced Lunch status).
- Students who are ineligible for Federal Student Aid must be lawfully present in the United States or apply to be lawfully present in the United States.
This year, two tiers of the DSF scholarship exist:
Bachelor's/Associate's Degree Scholarship:
- Meet the above eligibility conditions.
- Have a 2.75 GPA at graduation
- If you receive this scholarship, you will have four years to complete a bachelor's degree or two years to complete an associate's degree.
Certificate/Trade Scholarship:
- Must meet the above eligibility conditions.
- Have between a 2.0-2.74 GPA at graduation.
- If you receive the scholarship, you will have one year to complete the certificate/trade program.
For students who would like to attend a bachelor's or associate's degree program and have below a 2.75 GPA, if you attend college for one year and finish with a 2.0 GPA or higher, you can become eligible for the DSF scholarship your second year of college.
John Lynch Family Foundation Scholarships
Due- 3/6/15
Amount- $5,000-$15,000
Scholarships for seniors who are student athletes and scholarships specifically for senior student athletes with disabilities or Down Syndrome. Click here for more information.
Colorado Educational Services and Development Association (CESDA)
Due- 3/6/15
Amount- $1,000
1. Applicant must be a first generation student, or member of an underrepresented ethnic or racial minority, and/or show financial need. 2. Applicant must be a resident of the State of Colorado. (Open to non-resident students. Eligible students include Asset, DACA and non-eligible U.S. permanent resident). 3. Applicant must enroll at a 2 or 4-year Colorado college or university in the fall of 2015 and take a minimum of 6 credit hours. 4. Applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 2.80 on a scale of 4.00. 5. Applicant will be selected by, but not limited to, the following criteria: leadership and community service-particularly within minority communities, past academic performance, personal and professional accomplishments, personal attributes special abilities, academic goals, and financial need. Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. Latina Scholarship
Due- 5/15/15
1. Applicant must be a female of Latino Heritage or be able to demonstrate dedication to community service and empowerment of the Latina/o community. 2. Applicant must plan to attend an accredited university in the Fall of 2015 as a freshman or first year student. 3. No hard copy applications will be accepted. Summer Program for Seniors
|
Apply for the Goodwill Summer Bridge Mentoring Program! You will be connected with a mentor who can help support you through your first year of college. Additionally, you will be connected to other students that will be attending your college. There will be fun events such as Red Rocks Film on the Rocks, Rockies games, rock climbing, etc. If you are interested, please see the description and application. There is no GPA or ACT requirement, but you need to apply before 3/20/15.
