Purdue Wine Grape Team Newsletter

Dear Indiana Winemakers

The 24th INDY International Wine Competition, one of the largest in the country and hosted by the Purdue Wine Grape Team, is just around the corner.  Many of our 78 wineries have already submitted wines but there are still two weeks left to enter:

The INDY's main purpose is to support the growing Indiana wine industry.  We take a three-tiered approach to guarantee its continued success:

  1. The INDY provides an opportunity to receive objective feedback on your wines against local and national competition.  This year, we will send judge's tasting notes back to the winemakers. Our professional judging panels are assembled to represent the general wine-buying public - your customers.
  2. The INDY's trophies and medals are a proven way to market and promote your wines in the tasting room, through press releases, on Facebook™, Twitter™, Instagram™, or Pinterest™, and to local distributors.
  3. The INDY judging panels all contain Indiana winemakers and growers for a chance to improve your own palates as judges or judges-in-training, and taste new winemaking trends and the competition firsthand.  All judges-in-training spots have been claimed this year, so sign-up early for 2016.

Here are the four commercial trophies we have especially dedicated to the wineries of Indiana:

  1. Indiana Winery of the Year - The Governor's Cup*.  All Indiana wineries qualify.  2015 winner:  Tonne Winery
  2. Indiana Farm Winery of the Year*.  Indiana wineries that produce less than 50,000 gal qualify.  2015 winner:  Turtle Run Winery
  3. Indiana Wine of the Year -- Highest vote for Indiana double-gold wines, includes all classes.  2015 winner:  Tonne Winery
  4. Indiana Traminette of the Year -- Highest vote for double-gold winning Traminette (Class 304).  2015 winner:  Easley Winery

*The determining formula for the wineries of the year include the total number of medals won, a quality point ratio based on the type of medals (double-gold, gold, silver, bronze) won, and the total number of wines entered.

We wish you much success with your Indiana Made wines this year!

Cheers,

Jill Blume, Executive Director
