Celebrating Grandparents!

It's easy to lose sight of the fact that many of the comforts we enjoy today are the result of the hard work and perseverance of those who came before us-namely, our grandparents. Despite their lot in life, our grandparents overriding goal was to make a better life for their descendents.

For most of us, no one has provided a more vital link to our heritage and family history. Whether by birth or through adoption, grandparents are treasures deserving of honor and respect.

But it took a while for their hard work and dedication to be recognized. It wasn't until 1970, when a West Virginia housewife named Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate.

The resolution languished in committee until Ms. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators and representatives in every state. They sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the US Congress passed legislation proclaiming National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter.

Throughout the year, CRD Associates has been using this newsletter to profile members of our team. In this issue, we honor the grandparents among us: Lyle Dennis and Brent Jaquet.

(We plan to take them both to a nice restaurant where they can plunder for Sweet 'N Low packets!)

Brent's seven grandkids are a tight knit group of cousins.  They range from Ben (21) a senior at Towson University; Noah (18) a freshman at Ft. Lewis College in Colorado, Ryan (11) and Lexi (8) in Boca Raton, FL; and Noah's sisters Macey (10), Averey (8) and Harper (6) in Annapolis.  Brent's kids Kelly, Jonathan and Betsey also snuck in the pictures.

Lyle and Janet Dennis enjoy some R&R in August at Bethany Beach, DE with Connor (3), Abby (6), Rosalie (2 months), Jonah (3...and a half!), and Sawyer (8 months).
