OVER 2,000 PARTICIPATE IN VIRTUAL WALK ACROSS ROUTE 6

For eight weeks this past spring, over 250 teams committed to walking at least 50 miles a week while taking a virtual tour of Route 6 through the Everybody Walks Across PA program. The participants logged in over 107,000 miles.

The Everybody Walks Across PA was a program of the Penn State Cooperative Extension Offices, spearheaded by Wyoming County's extension agent, Karen Bracey. The goal was to help people eat healthier and move more.

Partnering with the PA Route 6 Alliance and its nine convention and visitors bureaus, the program motivated participants to walk 400 miles over the 8 weeks, the equivalent to trekking across the whole length of Route 6 in Pennsylvania. The CVB partners provided information on sites along the way, promotional items and weekly giveaways.

Participants received weekly updates on what they would be seeing or visiting each week as they traveled from west to east. They also got tips on farmer's market and healthy products from each of the counties.

In the end, 94% of the respondents to a post-walk survey said that they increased their physical activity, while 42% increased their vegetable and fruits intake.

Were they motivated by the virtual tour of Route 6? Some said they were motivated to get healthier anyway and the tour was a bonus; 45% said that the walk across Route 6 was a motivator and 30% plan on visiting a site they learned about in their weekly updates.

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF PA ROUTE 6 HERITAGE CORRIDOR BEING STUDIED

The PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor is one of five state heritage areas being studied in a major initiative to measure the impact of tourism in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The study, a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, is being conducted by the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

The study will update information last gathered in 2008. In the 2008 Impact Study, it was discovered that 350,000 people traveled Route 6 in Pennsylvania each year, spending $93 million, and supporting 2,172 jobs with a payroll of $31 million.

Throughout the summer and fall, paper surveys will be distributed at nine sites across Route 6 with an option to fill out on-site or link through to a mobile site. Intercept surveys, one-on-one visitor surveys will be conduct at 3 sites: Kinzua Skywalk, Leonard Harrison State Park and the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitor Center.

Results of the study are expected to be released at the end of the year. The study is a cooperative joint venture of Heritage PA, the Center for Rural PA (CfRPA) and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).

ROUTE 6 INSPIRES

Amber Neefe Fowler, whose work is featured at the Potter County Artisan Center is making jewelry inspired by Route 6.  We love her take on the old Route 66 song.

With 350,000 people traveling the highway each year, there is no doubt that Route 6 memorabilia can sell.  If you would like to use the "DO 6" logo for any art or merchandise, please contact our office for permission.

BUSINESS ASSISTANCE

Despite the rumor mill, there are funding assistance programs available for tourism based businesses.  The first place to start is the state's website: www.newpa.com/sbcn.

Here the staff will answer questions related to critical business issues such as starting, registering, expanding, financing and managing a small business.  These staff members also have direct access to local and regional experts across the commonwealth that can meet with current and potential entrepreneurs and provide further business assistance.  Make sure to ask about the First Industry Tourism Program.
