MLK Day of Service

Americans across the country will honor Dr. King by helping their communities at thousands of projects spread across all 50 states.  Locally we have planned over two dozen projects so that you, too, can join in volunteer service.

Hudson Valley Singers

This local nonprofit provides amateur singers an opportunity to perform in a large chorus under professional conditions, music direction and accompaniment and contribute to the cultural life of the community through public performances. They are looking for more singers to join in as well as volunteer crew to help at their winter concert on January 19th.

Season for Service (cont'd)

Hearts are never fuller than during the holidays. Every day we receive requests for places to serve on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Our nonprofit partners ask us to remind you that volunteers are needed 365 days of the year.  They may not always have an opportunity on these particular days, but there is always a way to show compassion:

  • Check your nearby senior residence and see if they welcome friendly visitors on the holiday.  For those without family nearby, they would sincerely appreciate games, puzzles or pictures with a volunteer.
  • Write Happy New Year Cards for seniors and deliver them to a nursing home. You can also start thinking about putting together Valentine's Day cards, too.
  • Write thank you cards to give to your local police station, fire house or other emergency responders.
  • Organize a food, clothing or toiletries drive for a local agency.  Donations of these items are needed year-round.  For ideas of agencies/items, consult the agencies listed on our Holiday Page.
  • Sort through new and gently-used clothing and furniture and choose to donate them.
  • Commit to volunteering in 2014.  Register for MLK Day of Service!
