Brave New Worlds:
Creating Believable Science Fiction
and Fantasy Settings

with Patrice Sarath

World-building can be one of the trickiest aspects of writing science fiction and fantasy. We all want to re-create the sense of wonder we feel when we read speculative fiction. How did those authors do it?

This class will teach some basic worldbuilding concepts that will help students develop their own internally consistent worlds that produce a sense of wonder in their readers. The class will look at successful science fiction and fantasy books to deconstruct how these authors put their worlds together. Come prepared for writing exercises and deep discussion.
