KAMCHATKA WELCOMES YOU!

A message from Kamchatka's Director of Tourism, Guevork Shkhian

Dear Readers,

Permit me to invite you to visit our unique Kamchatka peninsula.  Few places in the world offer the opportunity for such a close relationship between people and nature as does Kamchatka. The region hosts hundreds of volcanoes and rivers, and countless waterfalls. Here live a great multitude of rare wildlife species; see for yourself with excursions to Kuril Lake where Kamchatka brown bear gather and to Starichkov Island where numerous maritime bird species nest. Kamchatka's geysers and sportsfishing are world renowned, and draw visitors from many countries. Less well known are the many opportunities for active vacationing - volcano climbing, rafting, and trekking over volcanic ash and lava to scenic hot springs. Kamchatka also abounds in legends and is rich in cultural heritage. Visitors are welcomed to the camps of the indigenous Koryak, Even, Itelmen and Aleuts to learn about their traditional lifestyles and participate in their colorful festivals.

Kamchatka's busy summer calendar starts with Volcano Day festivities in early July and runs through the Itelmen fall festival Alkalalalai in September.  Whether you choose to stay in a tent, cabin or one Kamchatka's modern hotels and resorts, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and Kamchatkan hospitality. Thanks to Yakutia Airlines' summer air service between Petropavlovsk and Anchorage, Americans can now reach this long-isolated corner of the world with a short, direct flight from the US.

I encourage you to experience Kamchatka's charisma and grandeur. Escape to Kamchatka this summer, and you'll return home refreshed.

Guevork T. Shkhian

AIRRUSSIA SUPPORTS TEAM YAMAL
AT THE ARCTIC WINTER GAMES

Every 2 years, young athletes from the world's arctic regions gather to compete in traditional and modern games, share their cultures, and celebrate. This year the Arctic Winter Games were held in Fairbanks, Alaska, March 15-23. Teams traveled from all over the Arctic to attend the games - Alaska, Greenland, Canada - but no team traveled further than that from Russia's Yamal Peninsula. The team of almost 100 athletes and trainers traveled via Russian air carrier Yamal Airlines, an Air Russia.US/InterPacific Aviation partner. AirRussia.US and sister company Interaviation Japan provided operational support for the charter.

Traditional games included the two-foot high kick, dog-mushing and Dene hand games; modern games included hockey, badminton, soccer and biathlon. The Yamal team earned 134 medals, including 55 gold - second only to the Alaskan home-team.

The 2016 games will be held in Nuuk, Greenland.
