Hopefully you had a great holiday season and are excited about what 2014 will bring both personally and professionally!
At WTS NC Triangle we are also excited about the New Year! Earlier this month members of our chapter headed to the beach for an enjoyable weekend of event planning and bonding. In addition to developing a great lineup of activities, the chapter is rolling out a new BINGO game that will add some fun to attending our events, being involved, and helping us reach our 2014 goal of recruiting 15 new members! More details on this game can be found further down in this newsletter.
2014 also brings changes to the executive board members. I am happy to announce the new officers; Jenny Fleming from Ecological Engineering as Vice President, Jessalyn Abril from Stewart as Treasurer, and Memory Washaya from NCDOT who will continue to serve as secretary. I am thrilled to have such a strong team in place for the upcoming year!
I hope to see you at our next event, and if you would like to be more involved in our chapter please don't hesitate to contact me or any other members of our board. We would love to have you!
Here's to the beginning of a great 2014 year together - cheers!

Upcoming Events in February
The WTS NC Triangle Chapter will host a luncheon Feb. 27 to recognize the young women who were awarded WTS scholarships this year. The guest speaker will be Karen Fussell, P.E., North Carolina Department of Transportation Division 3 Engineer. Her division includes Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Ponder and Sampson counties. At the luncheon, Ms. Fussell will discuss the importance of education in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and how women can advance in these careers. To attend, register here by Feb. 24.
The chapter awarded $4,500 in scholarships this year. Read more about why these fabulous women were selected. The WTS NC Triangle Scholarship winners are:
Other February activities include:
- Feb. 18 - The chapter and NCDOT are teaming up for "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day," as part of National Engineers Week. The goal of this event is to encourage young women to think about how they can start now to develop the skills necessary to enter a STEM field in college.
- Feb. 20 - Transportation YOU mentor program will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at ITRE (Institute for Transportation Research and Education) on the NC State University Centennial Campus in Raleigh. Dinner will be provided, and a special guest will speak to attendees. Transportation YOU is a WTS initiative to interest young women in STEM fields and careers. If you have or know a middle or high school aged girl interested in STEM-related activities, RSVP for this event by contacting Nadia Aboulhosn.

Play BINGO with WTS
The WTS NC Triangle Chapter is starting a BINGO game with a twist this year. Participants attend WTS events and mark those events off a BINGO card. There will be prizes for the participants who achieve BINGO (mark off 5 squares in a row) or who mark off any 5 squares, as well as for those who mark off every square on the BINGO card.
Prizes are listed on the back of the BINGO card and include a WTS embroidered fleece, free membership or free admittance to a WTS event in 2015. There is a limit of one prize per person. So get involved in WTS - visit our website for information about upcoming events. The BINGO game will last through December 31, 2014.
For any questions or comments about the BINGO game, contact Brittany Martishius or (919) 232-6649. |
In Case You Missed It ...
Transit Makes $en$e
A coalition of community, business, civil and elected leaders came together in November 2013 for the Transit Makes $en$e Summit to advocate for expanded bus and rail in the triangle community. About 250 people attended to learn how public transit can provide an economic boost to the community and its future.
Diverging Diamond Interchanges
In September, The WTS NC Triangle Chapter hosted an update on the progress of Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDI) on our state's transportation system. Michael Reese and Jim Dunlop with the NCDOT Congestion Management Section talked about how these unique interchanges function, along with the benefits and challenges associated with them. View the power point presentation by clicking here.
Dress for Success
In December, members of the chapter met for lunch to support "Dress for Success" Triangle, which promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools necessary to thrive at work. WTS members donated clothing to the organization and learned how it is helping area women support themselves and their families. Visit the Dress for Success website for more information. |
We are always looking for newsletter content, volunteers, ideas and suggestions about our involvement in transportation programs. If you are interested in being a newsletter editor please contact Leslie Tracey or Paddy Jordan.
Thanks
