PLEASE JOIN US IN WELCOMING
MATT TROEDSON TO THE CSWS FACULTY
Cedar Springs Waldorf School is thrilled to welcome Matt Troedson to our Faculty. Matt is our new rising Fifth Grade Teacher, taking over for Amanda Mutrux who has moved down the hill to Camellia Waldorf School closer to her family. Matt is no stranger to CSWS, he completed his teaching practicum with Amy Elder's current class (Fifth Grade curriculum), traveled with Amy as a chaperone for her 2012 Eighth Grade trip and accompanied Hanna Jenkins with her Fifth Grade Mendocino field trip this spring. "Bravery like Mr. Troedson's doesn't come along every day," said Amy Elder. "When I was looking for a male chaperone for my last Eighth Grade trip, I contacted Rudolf Steiner College and they recommended Matt. I met him at Starbucks, introduced myself, explained my plans and described my class -without hesitation he said, "I'm in! The next year my Fifth Grade class was lucky enough to have him as a practicum teacher. His heart force, strength and warmth drew my students in, and within a week or two he was part of the class family" said Amy Elder. Matt was born in Napa, CA, to loving parents, the youngest of four children. From an early age his parents instilled a sense of wonder and a love of exploration. To this day he loves hiking and being in nature. As he grew older he developed a love of reading, especially fiction. Matt's exploration of places unknown moved from his feet to his brain as he devoured any book he could get his hands on. He still enjoy books, as well as games of all kinds. Matt studied the Russian language at University of California, Irvine but left to turn his focuses elsewhere. He moved back to Napa, found a job and enrolled in the local junior college. A move to Sacramento followed to continue his academic search while finding a career in the financial services industry. While it paid very well, it did nothing to satisfy his longing for an actual life path. Ten years ago Matt was called to study the Japanese martial art Aikido. Aikido is an art that addresses the whole person. The founder of Aikido stressed the importance of heart, mind, body and spirit. Aikido has helped him to become more aware of himself, his surroundings, to be more patient and centered. It was also in his dojo that he met an amazing young woman, Sarah whom he married four years ago. While training and teaching students in the dojo, Matt realized that he wanted to teach as a career, specifically children. Not really enamored of the public school system, he began to look for alternatives and found Waldorf Education. He studied at Rudolf Steiner College while at the same time completing his Bachelor's degree in Multiple Subject Teaching. He graduated from RSC in 2013 and is very much looking forward to his time at Cedar Springs Waldorf School.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
Jennifer & Bennett Lacher
|
| Bennett, Myles, Jennifer & Gwen Lacher |
The Lacher family came to CSWS in 1999 from Spring Valley, NY (Green Meadow Waldorf School). They moved here with no house, no jobs, 3 kids, and a bird. Upon arrival, they enrolled their two oldest boys, Wesley and Grant at CSWS (grades 4 and 2). It was true culture shock for the whole family but the strong, caring CSWS community supported their huge transition.
Bennett went on to become a talented cabinet builder, and finish carpenter...a true artist at his craft. Jennifer has had the gift of teaching handwork to several of CSWS classes over the years and Fiber Arts at Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp. Recently Jennifer has returned to adult education for Occupational Therapy and is currently doing home health care.
Director of Community Development, Lynn Morgan notes "Bennett and Jennifer are both talented and have shared these gifts with Cedar Springs over the years. Bennett is a talented craftsman who has made many beautiful pieces, such as student desks, shelves, parent mailboxes on campus or donations for our school's auction. Likewise, Jennifer's handcraft skills have gifted our classrooms, play costumes and more."
Wesley (age 25, CSU Sonoma) met his best friend for life, Brendan O'Connor while in Miss Magruder's class. Paula ThompSon was the strongest influence on the boys and family, in the early years, lovingly yet firmly nurturing the Lachers in countless ways. Grant (age 22, CSU Channel Islands) finished his 8th grade with Paula. Gwen (age 17, at El Dorado High School) thrived from Morning Glory through 8th grade at CSWS. Myles (age 13, rising 7th grader) has had the pleasure of a few wonderfully gifted teachers including his current, Mrs. Elder that the family holds very near and dear to their hearts. As Jennifer expresses "Amy is truly one of a kind; genuine, loving and brilliant!"
The Lachers have always valued and appreciated Waldorf education and felt the need to contribute their time and talents to their classes, school and community. Waldorf values have enriched their lives for over 18 years. "I know my children are better people for having this special experience during the most influential years of development. Sharing life with other children, families and teachers all striving for a common goal has made our lives more meaningful" Jennifer believes.
Lynn Morgan concludes "What has impressed me the most about the Lachers over the years, is their commitment to Waldorf for their children. And I love all four of their kids."
Thank you to the entire Lacher family for all your contributions to our school and community!

| Michael & Kendall Curtis |
What I've Learned in 14 Years as a Parent at Cedar Springs
Lynn Morgan, Ed.D., outgoing Director of Community Development
My husband, Jim Curtis, and I first started at CSWS when our son, Michael was almost four years old and our daughter, Kendall was just one year old. Now Michael (CSWS Class of 2011) will be a senior in high school this September and Kendall will be an entering freshman (CSWS Class of 2014). Both are already taller than me and making us proud as they embark on their teenage years. It's hard to imagine that time flew by so quickly, but, of course it did. This transition, along with my upcoming career transition this year, has caused me to reflect on what helped me and my family to make this journey with two children all the way through Eighth Grade at Cedar Springs. Did we learn anything during our experience that might be helpful to others? It feels very much like we did, and I would like to offer these "lessons learned" below for all the incoming and continuing parents at our school, to consider:
- Ask your teacher first. Before you plan something for your class, before you assume your child knows the whole story behind whatever happened at school that day, before you jump to any conclusions, ask your teacher first. Our teachers are only human (though often quite exceptional) but they are also rightfully in charge of your child's class. Be respectful of their legitimate authority with regards to your class. I have found that parents who respectfully approach their teachers with their questions early on are far more satisfied and maintain better rapport with their teachers over time, which serves everyone especially their children.
- Follow your teacher's advice. Our whole Faculty at Cedar Springs is a wealth of wisdom and insight about our children. From bedtime routines, healthy child development, avoidance of media and other harmful influences, study habits, proper nutrition, positive peer relations, setting boundaries, adolescent behavior and more, our Faculty are a vast resource for all of us as parents throughout their education. Do what your Kindergarten teachers suggest and keep on doing it, as appropriate, as your children grow. Healthy rhythms, nutrition and boundaries help so much in the immediacy of early childhood, but they also do wonders in the teen years as well.
- Get to know the other families in your class and at the school. In looking back about how else our family greatly benefitted from our years at Cedar Springs, it is the community that was also significant to us. Getting to know the other families in our classes and their children fostered greater tolerance, understanding, friendships and even supportive commiseration since as parents we went through similar phases with our children and could help each other along the way. Parenting is a tough job and having this support network over the years has been invaluable. Additionally, our children's peers have all been tremendous teachers and friends to our children which is priceless.
- Stay the course. Families come and go for various reasons at our school, but for those families who choose to stay with Waldorf all the way from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade reap the full potential of the experience. There is nothing else like seeing your children grow alongside of their Kindergarten friends all the way up to their Eighth Grade Graduation and beyond. Many of the worries that some Waldorf parents have during the first few years in the lower grades get resolved and awe-inspired once the children progress into Third and Fourth. And I don't think you will find a better middle school experience elsewhere both in academics and the social aspect than we have at Cedar Springs, specifically.
- Pitch in. Yes, Jim and I both did a lot of volunteering over the years. But we did it willingly out of appreciation of our teachers, and it was completely worth it. Our children saw us involved and caring about their school, our teachers felt supported and the school grew as a result our contributions and the contributions of many others.
- Be open to learning. This education is as much for the parents as it is for the children. Both Jim and I have learned so much from being a part of Cedar Springs. Attend every parent meeting, class, study group, etc. that you can. If you are open and curious, you will gain many skills, insights, practical tips/ideas and more that are really helpful for your whole family.
- Strive. This is a word that is used at lot in Waldorf schools and at Cedar Springs in particular, and it makes so much more sense now as I reflect back over the years. Waldorf Education is designed to develop the whole human being and this extends to our personal development as well. As parents, striving to be our best as human beings is a worthy task for ourselves, our children and all of those around us. Continue to strive in all you do while you are at CSWS and you will reaps many benefits in your journey.
Many blessings to all of you at Cedar Springs as you continue the rewarding work of growing this amazing school. I will be starting my consulting business this summer and look forward to staying in contact with many of you and visiting CSWS for many years to come ([email protected], cell 530-409-2570). I have great confidence in the strength and spirit of Cedar Springs and know that you will continue to bring forth a school "worthy of all children" who will bless the "world with their deeds."
Our School Verse
May we strive together with good will
To form a community
Where the gifts of each one are acknowledged
And where each one gives one's best;
That the highest spiritual powers
May help us fulfill our purpose.
May the light of inner vision guide us.
May the beauty and strength of spirit
Shine through our daily endeavors
To bring forth a school
Worthy of all children,
That they may learn to live
In spirit awareness
Blessing the world with their deeds.

Essay About Perils of Technology Wins Waldorf Alumni a Full College Scholarship to Roanoke College
For Elizabeth Knudsen, writing about technology's role in education for a scholarship contest was simple. "I wrote about growing up, learning everything without technology," the 18-year-old Danbury High school senior said. Her essay, along with an interview and academic resume, earned her a four-year scholarship worth $150,000 to Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. She was among three students who won full scholarships at the school. Read more

LOVE VOLLEYBALL?? Join the CSWS Volleyball Coaching Team
I am a CSWS Dad and I have been coaching the CSWS Girls' Volleyball Team for the last four years. This coming year will be my last year coaching the team. When I started the Girls' Volleyball Team, it was my hope that it would continue beyond my tenure. It has been a great group of girls and it has been very rewarding for me. To help ease the transition for somebody else to take over as coach after I leave, I am hoping to recruit a volunteer to be my assistant coach this last year with the hopes that he/she can take over the coaching next year.
Ideally, I'm looking for someone who can work with youth and is interested in the game of volleyball. You would not necessarily need to know that much about volleyball, as I can easily teach you all that is needed this year. The practices and games are after school. There is no weekend duty. This is a volunteer position and all equipment needed will be provided.
If you are interested in this rewarding and enjoyable experience to benefit these young women, please contact me by sending email to [email protected].
