Comedy Night

JLI

A Word from the Rabbi
Rabbi Paltiel Greetings!

There's lots going on -
  • This Saturday is Sisterhood Family Shabbat. It's also Rosh Chodesh - the new month - a very appropriate time to celebrate jewish women. Laurie Radler is sponsoring kiddush lunch in honor of her mom's first yahrzeit, and will deliver the Sisterhood dvar torah (Torah thought). Please join us for an exciting Shabbat. (Remember - Sisterhood Family Shabbat is NOT for women only, and you don't have to belong to Sisterhood to attend). Please note: Because my daughter Mushka is out of town, there will not be a Junior Congregation, sorry...

  • Saturday night Sisterhood is sponsoring Comedy Night - an exciting social event. Lead comedian is Orly Calderon-Sherman's daughter Maya. Great opportunity to come together socially as a community. It's not too late to register. Click above for details and to rsvp (really inexpensive for a fantastic night out).

  • Sunday morning we begin the new adult education course by the Jewish Learning institute (JLI) entitled To Be a Jew in the Free World. Not too late to register - click above for details and to rsvp. You are also welcome to sample the first lesson and then decide. This course should be mandatory for every modern American Jew, as it is relevant and offers practical tips in how to navigate between our modern lives and our ancient traditions, both in our own lives as adults as well as in our struggle to transmit Judaism to our children and grandchildren.

  • Watch your mailbox for Sisterhoods VERY IMPRESSIVE Purim Ball invitation. Our first ever adult masquerade party.
There's lots going on in your community. Get involved! I look forward to seeing you.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Sisterhood Shabbat
Sisterhood

Sisterhood Shabbat | Saturday, February 1 - 9:30 AM

The Chabad Sisterhood has instituted a monthly "Sisterhood Shabbat", usually on or around Rosh Chodesh, in celebration of the Jewish Woman. On these monthly Shabbats, Sisterhood members will be encouraged to attend services, a special Junior Congregation service will be held for the children 10:30 AM - Noon, and aspects of the service will celebrate this theme. Sisterhood encourages all Jewish women (whether Sisterhood members of not) - and men - to join them. (Sorry... My daughter Mushka is out of town so no Junior Congregation will take place this time).

NEW JLI: To Be a Jew in the Free World
6 Sundays, Begins February 2 | 10:00 AM

What was it like for our ancestors to say goodbye to the shtetl, to set out to discover new lives for themselves, along with all of the liberties the free world had to offer? At the dawn of the enlightenment, how did our parents adapt their Judaism to the developments of a modern age? And what can we learn from their struggles to connect deeply with our own Jewish identities?

Question of the Week
Question of the week
Can a Viking be Jewish?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss

Question: I feel like I am a Jewish soul born in a non-Jewish body. I have always been surrounded by Jewish friends, loved the religion, and after years of study I just fulfilled my dream and converted to Judaism. My family has no Jewish roots whatsoever, I descend from Vikings on both sides, so it is all a bit of a mystery. Any explanation?

Modern physics has brought us to a realization of the oneness of our universe, from which we may better grasp the Oneness of its Creator:

All that exists can be divided into two elements: The force, and the particle that bears that force. In other terms: quality and quantity. With a simple equation, Einstein demonstrated that even these two elements are truly one.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Terumah
The people of Israel are called upon to contribute thirteen materials-gold, silver and copper; blue-, purple- and red-dyed wool; flax, goat hair, animal skins, wood, olive oil, spices and gems-out of which, G-d says to Moses, "They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, and I shall dwell amidst them."

On the summit of Mount Sinai, Moses is given detailed instructions on how to construct this dwelling for G-d so that it could be readily dismantled, transported and reassembled as the people journeyed in the desert.

In the Sanctuary's inner chamber, behind an artistically woven curtain, was the ark containing the tablets of testimony engraved with the Ten Commandments; on the ark's cover stood two winged cherubim hammered out of pure gold. In the outer chamber stood the seven-branched menorah, and the table upon which the " showbread" was arranged.

The Sanctuary's three walls were fitted together from 48 upright wooden boards, each of which was overlaid with gold and held up by a pair of silver foundation sockets. The roof was formed of three layers of coverings: (a) tapestries of multicolored wool and linen; (b) a covering made of goat hair; (c) a covering of ram and tachash skins. Across the front of the Sanctuary was an embroidered screen held up by five posts.

Surrounding the Sanctuary and the copper-plated altar which fronted it was an enclosure of linen hangings, supported by 60 wooden posts with silver hooks and trimmings, and reinforced by copper stakes.
