Madonna Terry

What do Mathematics, Making Garden Totems, Pond Fishing and a Macrame Snowflake have in common? The answer is Learning in Retirement's Madonna Terry.

Madonna came to Valdosta State College after graduating from Fitzgerald High in 1973 and married her husband of 38 years. After graduating from VSC with a BS in Ed, Madonna taught mathematics for a combined total of 30 years at Valdosta High School and Valdosta Middle School before retiring in 2007.

Shortly thereafter, she became a member of Learning in Retirement and participated in the field trips to local venues and classes in crafting and gardening. Her interests include working in the yard and tending her flowers as well as knitting and crocheting. She says she "dibble-dabbles in lots of crafts, but prefers to be outdoors if possible." This fall she will be taking an LIR group outdoors to a private pond near Valdosta for a "Pond Fishing" class.

The Terrys travel often with friends and have been from the east - Niagra Falls, Washington D.C. - to the west - Alaska, Yellowstone - and places in between like the Grand Canyon and have "loved every trip!" They have 2 hounds adopted from the Humane Society.

Madonna also earned an MEd and Ed. S from VSC and completed her Ed. D. in 2005 at VSU. We are happy to have this lady of diverse talents as a part of our program.

Learning in Retirement

Use It or Lose It!

Exercising your mind becomes even more important as the age for retirement approaches.

"For several decades, people have used the term "use it or lose it" to aptly describe the best way to off-set the problems that come with aging. As overly simplistic as the idea sounds, scientific studies continue to show that if you disengage in later life, things fall apart. This has particular relevance when we're talking about cognitive performance."*

This is where the VSU Continuing Education Learning in Retirement program comes in.

Learning in Retirement (LIR) is an organization for individuals 50 years of age and above that provides a unique opportunity for cultural growth, lifelong learning, and recreation.

This fall we will be offering many opportunities for keeping your minds and bodies active. Find our schedule of classes online or check out the course brochure which should be arriving in your mailbox soon.

Adrift or Achieving?

Like many other people, you may feel adrift in the world
But, almost anything is possible if you have a plan to guide you.

Do you know what your goals are? Have you spent time thinking about what you really want from life?

Any endeavor, business or otherwise, takes vision, focus, determination, and persistence to be able to move from vision to reality.

Once you decide that it's time to stop drifting and start focusing on making your dreams a reality, there are many tools at your disposal to help you explore, get a plan, and achieve.

One excellent and convenient way to start the process is via courses online. VSU Continuing Education offers a wide variety of  6-week instructor-paced online opportunities that can help you get from 'drifting' to 'doing.'

If you have thought about writing that best seller or you can see yourself working as a grant writer, you will find good information and great training with one or several of Business and Personal Writing or Grant Writing choices including:

Additionally, online Career Exploration courses allow you to satisfy your curiosity about various career fields from the comfort of your personal computer.

So, are you dreaming or doing?

In a recent internet article

6 Ways To Achieve Any Goal, Forbes.com cautions against drifting:  "One year from now, you'll be one year older no matter what. What can you do with your goals today that will make looking back to today feel really different and really satisfying?"

Instructor-paced courses begin on a Wednesday in each month.
