JUNE 6, 1944
BEGINNING OF THE END OF WWII

On June 6, 1944, during World War II, more than 160,000 allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, "we will accept nothing less than full victory." More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day's end, the allies gained a foot-hold in continental Europe.

The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 allied soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe to defeat Adolph

SUMMER READING CENTER OPENS TUESDAY, JUNE 10

The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence's Summer AR Reading Center opens Tuesday morning June 10. For six weeks (June 10-July 17), readers of any age, at any reading level, and from anywhere, may take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. at the United Way's Betty Jo Roach Community Center at 211 W 4th St., directly behind the Post Office

Just look for the big Reading Capital of the World (RCW) sign with the big (high!) number of 5,154,286 AR points!

The RCW effort was launched in 1997 and has never slowed. Divide 5,154,286 by 41,064 (the official population of Tift County) and you get just over 125 AR points per person, an amazing figure no other county, town or city has been able to touch.

Ricki Reader
Reading Capital mascot Ricki Reader will be on hand at Tuesday's opening to welcome readers. The Reading Center will once again be run by Terri NallsTifton's "Reading Angel."

Terri practices what she preaches, having earned 13,712 AR points. Debbie Bruce will once again
co-direct the Reading Center. Volunteers (call Moppy at 382-7515) will be on hand to welcome and assist.

Readers get smarter and improve reading skills -- the most important tool in tour academic tool box. On top of that, every AR point earns 10 cents for the media center or library of choice to buy new books. Bonuses of up to $1,000 can be earned by ambitious readers -- students, parents, teachers and friends.

You may take an AR test on any of more than 150,000 AR book tests -- and rising.  It is easy to check online (AR BookFinder) to see if your current or favorite book has an AR test. The Tifton-Tift County Public Library has tons of AR books and will be happy to help you locate some fine choices.

Individuals who make this program work include Tift County School Technology Director Dana Spurlin, United Way Executive Director Greg Millette, sign designer Danny McLaren with the City of Tifton and techonogy guru Bill Jackson, who sets up the nine computers.

The Summer AR Program is operated and funded for the 17th year by the TIft County Foundation for Educational Excellence.

In the photo above, during a morning break at Brumby's Tennis Clinic, young players are found reading books and readying for testing at the AR Center.

The Alzheimer's Association has proclaimed June 2014
Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month

This month, the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is taking a closer look at newly diagnosed people with Early Stage Dementia. We are mailing surveys we've put together to help us improve the quality of current services and develop new services to meet the needs of individuals with dementia. For instance, would you benefit from fun outings and get-togethers with others facing the same challenges and changes as you?

Traditionally, dementia-related services focus on care partners, with little offered for the people with early dementia. Newly diagnosed people with Early Stage Dementia have reported that they often feel they have nowhere to turn to express their feelings, which include anger, grief, frustration, and loneliness. However, they continue to have the skills and talents to contribute to the community, enrich the lives of others, and enjoy life.

While persons with Early Stage Dementia have many challenges and issues in common, each person is different, so we wish to determine the individual needs and interests of persons with early dementia in our community. We also are planning gatherings in your community or close to you later in June for those with Early Stage Dementia. We need to know if you would like to come.

Please call 1-800-272-3900, and we'll confidentially mail you the survey. Also, if you want, we'll put you on the list for a confidential social gathering in your community.

Also, we have ordered copies of the newly released book "Living with Alzheimer's & Other Dementia's, 101 Stories of Care giving, Coping and Compassion." Let us know if you would like a copy!

We are committed to providing the highest quality information, referrals, and services to those whose lives are impacted by Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you.

Sincerely,

Bonnie J. Sayles
