Dragon
October 2013
Greetings!

Let's catch up since the last newsletter....we have had some great events. The 80's in the park , Lou's Blues benefit for Annie the dragon, Suntree Oktoberfest, West Melbourne Founders Day, Bob Evans, Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays. We were able to get more supporters and raise some monies to rebuild ANNIE!!
Remembering Annie

Imagine if you can Eau Gallie in the mid 70's on July 4th. The bridge was not so high, but was a drawbridge and you always hated getting stuck on the bridge when it was opened to let the boats through. The Oleander Hotel (where Squid lips now stands) was still overlooking the Indian River, although closed, you could see how grand it was in its hay day. Eau Gallie Library was a two room building and not the larger building it is today. Next to Eau Gallie Library was Pineapple Park which is situated along the Indian River.  In the park there were several carnival vendors, like cotton candy, popcorn, hot dog stands, snow cones and several games for the childeren.

Every kid had sparklers and every family had lawn chairs and blankets. Families would all get situated all over the park and line up along the shore of Eau Gallie for the big event! Now remember that Eau Gallie Boulevard was only two lanes back then, so there was plenty of room to pull off on the side of the road and place a blanket and chairs. As a kid the anticipation to the big event was unbearable, I would ask my dad how long it would be until the fireworks and when the dragon was going to breathe fire. I know I drove him crazy, being hyped up on all the carnival food. Knowing my dad he probably handed me another box of sparklers and told me when it gets dark..... go have some fun with the other kids (see back then you didn't have to have a leash for your child).

When the big event happened I would get so excited to see the dragon breathe fire and the fireworks lighting up the sky. It was such a great time in my life and will always be a fond memory of mine watching Annie breathe fire,  as I was watching fireworks in the sky. What more could a 6 year old boy ask for?

This is just one memory of Annie I have. As I grew up there were many more, maybe in future newsletters I will share more.

Dragon Festival 2013 February 25th at the Wickham Park Pavilion.

For over a century, the Dragon known as " Gedeon"  has kept the villagers of Melbourneshire at bay.  Knights from far and wide have road to their aid only to meet a fiery end.

By day the villagers live a peaceful existent but by night they fear the fire in the sky. Each year on the anniversary of Gedeon's birth, they hold a feast and games to find the bravest and the strongest to send to banish the dragon.

This January 25th your invited to join the villagers of Melbourneshire, to drink their wine, partake in their feast  and games but be warned, should you prove worthy - you will have to face their dragon.

The Dragon Festival will be a combination of a Renaissances Fair, Highland Games with a little Hogwarts for good measure. Taking place at Wickham Pavilion January 25th, 2014, the festival is to benefit the Save Dragon Point Foundation and will feature performers of all kinds, a Quidditch match and lessons, Highland Games, Celtic Music, vendors, Petting zoo, pony rides, dunk tanks, vegetable justice and other ren-fair favorite games, games of skill crafts and artisans of every kind, a kings feast buffet dinner and other food vendors and of course

1 teaspoon of liquid hickory smoke (or to taste)

Combine all ingredients chill and serve with captain wafer crackers.

If you have a local recipe you would like to submit email to DPoe.savethedragon@cfl.rr.com

We also need to thank Jeff and Aynn Christal & family as well as Lewis VanDercar as none of this would be happening now if it was not for their vision 30+ years ago...
