STEM Council Awards New STEM BEST and RLE Models

The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council has announced the 2015 STEM BEST and STEM RLE awardees for our Southeast region!  Davenport Community School District has been awarded the STEM BEST model, and the awardee for the STEM RLE model is  West Branch Community School District.

Both STEM BEST and STEM RLE models transform typical K-12 classroom environments and methods to unite business and education and develop clear pathways from STEM education to STEM careers in the state.

"The STEM BEST model allows students to experience a local industry or business environment firsthand that exposes them to STEM career opportunities right in their backyards," said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, co-chair of the STEM Council. "The STEM RLE model engages students in a more collaborative, technological environment that prepares them for STEM success in college or career training after high school."

Each selected program submitted an in-depth proposal, considering factors like education driven by business and industry need, rigorous, relevant and dynamic STEM curriculum, and authentic partnerships. The programs bring various strengths in community partnerships, district demographics, and program focus and will serve as models or prototypes for business-education partnerships across the state.

To learn more about these programs, visit www.IowaSTEM.gov/STEMBEST or www.IowaSTEM.gov/STEMRLE.

STEM Pre-Service Teacher Conference - A Success!

2015 STEM Pre-Service Teacher Conference 2015 STEM Pre-Service Teacher Conference
On November 6 and 7, the SE Iowa STEM Hub hosted the 2015 STEM Pre-Service Teacher Conference at the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa. This conference allowed pre-service teachers the chance to network with their future colleagues as well as hear from professors and experienced professionals from various institutions across the state.

Pre-service teachers from across the state of Iowa attended the conference, including students from the following educational institutions: the University of Northern Iowa, Wartburg College, the University of Iowa, Buena Vista University, Luther College, Iowa Wesleyan University, Northwestern College, Grinnell College, Cornell College, Graceland University, and Grandview University.

During Friday's portion of the conference, pre-service teachers attended a networking dinner with a keynote address given by several teachers from Metro High School. Saturday's conference involved many break-out sessions on innovative instructional approaches and resources for STEM education as well as an un-conference session for pre-service teachers to discuss their perspectives and opinions. The break-out sessions included topics such as the ASSIST Teaching Approach, Mathematical Modeling, Project Lead the Way Certification, Standards Based Grading, the Biophilia Concept, and Using an Argument-Based Inquiry Approach to Teach NGSS Standards.

Attendants of the conference described it as "very engaging" because of sessions that involved "wonderful and insightful information" and "different perspectives and ideas."

To view materials such as presentations from various break-out sessions and links to organizations from the Resources session of the conference, please visit our website.

Call for Scale-Up Program Proposals

For the 2016-17 school year, Change the Equation and the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council are collaborating on the Iowa STEM Scale-Up Program, an initiative to scale effective STEM programs in the state of Iowa using a combination of state and private funds.

The Iowa STEMworks application portal is now open for applications from exemplary STEM programs. If you are a part of a program that serves K-12 students and would like to apply for admission into STEMworks, please register to apply. Proposals are due by 5:00 pm on December 7.

Programs that are already in STEMworks need to complete a set of Iowa-specific scale-up questions in order to be considered for the Scale-Up Program.  Programs that have been selected for the Iowa Scale-Up will be notified on January 15, 2016.
