A few new faces at Guthrie County State Bank

We have expanded our lending team and are excited to introduce these three experienced banking professionals.   

Matt Pearey, Consumer Loan Officer
Matt was born and raised in Guthrie Center and attended Buena Vista University where he majored in sports management and minored in business administration while playing football for the Beavers. Since graduating he has worked at Wells Fargo Financial and then for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, most recently as a consumer loan underwriter. Matt is proud to call Guthrie Center home again and looks forward to becoming reconnected to the community.

Chris Carlson, Credit Analyst
A native of West Point, NE, Chris started his career with Wells Fargo in Sioux Falls, SD, after graduating with honors from Buena Vista University. He transferred to the Des Moines office for a promotion and to move to his wife Jamie's hometown of Guthrie Center. The next 14 years saw Chris move through the ranks gaining experience primarily in agricultural and commercial real estate financing, most recently as assistant vice president and portfolio manager. Now that he is not commuting two hours a day, Chris is able to spend more time with his wife and three children and looks forward to becoming more involved in the community.  
 
Mark Cates
Mark is a native of Ida Grove, IA, and graduated from Simpson College with double majors in business management and sports administration and also played football for the Simpson Storm. He brings progressive experience as a personal banker from Wells Fargo in several locations, most recently in La Crosse, WI. Now that they live in Panora, Mark, his wife, Jana, and two children are closer to family and looking forward to everything that comes with raising children in a small community.
Maintaining Debit Card Security

You may have seen the recent headlines about card skimmers being found at several Casey's General Store locations in Nebraska and one in Davenport, Iowa. (To see a list of these locations, click here.) If you have any concerns about your debit card security, please contact us.

accounts attached to your Guthrie County State Bank debit card. We have several safe, secure and convenient tools available to do this including:
  • GCSB Mobile Banking with alerts - track your accounts on your mobilephone with our app and set up alerts to notify you of balances, specific transactions and more
  • SHAZAM's BOLT$ app - this app is specific to your debit card, helping you track debit card activity. It provides the option to pause your card if it is stolen or misplaced and also allows you to set alerts for a wide variety of transaction types.
  • GCSB Internet Banking - check your accounts, transfer funds and monitor activity via the Internet

Building our lending team

With the addition of Matt Pearey and Mark Cates as consumer lenders, Guthrie County State Bank is able to make these organizational changes to our lending team:
  • Mike Underwood, CEO and president, is the primary commercial lender for GCSB commercial customers.
  • Dale Behrends, vice president, continues as the primary agricultural lender and also works with commercial accounts and small businesses.
  • Gayle Shackelford, vice president/marketing officer, focuses primarily on origination of all types of mortgage loans, as well as consumer loans.
  • Chris Carlson joined the bank in August as a credit analyst to support the lending function.
  • Jamie Patrick, executive vice president and chief cashier, has a primary focus on internal/external operations and will no longer work with loans.
  • Brandon Monaghan, vice president/compliance officer, will no longer work with loans and will focus on ensuring compliance in all bank operations due to increased federal and state regulations as well as be responsible for expanding internal audit functions.

Thank you, Linda!

After almost 18 years with Guthrie County State Bank, including 14 years as a GCSB Heritage Club Coordinator, Linda Wendl will be retiring at the end of the year. We will miss her friendly smile and great customer service in the Bank. Linda started at the bank in December 1997 and helped to open the branch in Panora in April 1998.  
 
"I especially liked showcasing some of the businesses and attractions in Guthrie County," said Linda. "I can't think of a single trip I didn't like, but the motor coach trips are always favorites and Mystery Trips are especially fun!"
 
Join us for our Christmas Open House on December 18 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. as that will be Linda's last day. Stop by the GCSB Panora location to bid her a fond farewell or send her an email. We wish Linda and her family the best as she starts this new adventure!
