Sickle cell anemia is prevalent in Sub Saharan Africa. Healthy red blood cells are shaped like a disc. Sickle cell red blood cells become sickle-shaped, like a "C." Because of their odd shape, sickle cell red blood cells don't move easily through small blood vessels. They can get stuck, form into clumps, and block blood vessels. This can cause pain, infections and damage to the organs.

At Ryvanz Mia Orphan Home in Ghana, our volunteers have always loved getting to know the identical twins boys Etse & Atsu, who both suffered from sickle cell anemia. Smart and funny, they were rarely apart. Etse was particularly vulnerable, and when he got sick, he was often hospitalized.

Etse passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital in Kpando, Ghana.

Everyone who knew him is deeply grieving the loss. An alumni volunteer has donated to support sending grieving counselors to their home. We are particularly concerned for Atsu's continued care and support, especially  through the loss of his twin brother .

Village Volunteers has set up a fund to support Atsu's continued care. If instead of a one time donation, you give a small amount monthly, we will have funds to support Atsu's necessary care for future treatments and transfusions.

Please go to the drop down menu on our Donate page and click on Ryvanz Mia. Please write "In honor of Etse" in the memo line. We appreciate your support!

Onward!

After returning to the office from a successful three-week trip to New York,  I'm feeling invigorated with renewed enthusiasm.

Thank you to those who helped fortify me with love and support both while on the road and in our office in Seattle in my absence

Executive Director
"Persistence: The Key Ingredient"
Every month the Women's Business Exchange (WBE) brings inspiring, educational, and entertaining community and business leaders to the podium for monthly breakfast events.

Village Volunteer's (VV) Executive Director, Shana Greene, will be speaking at the WBE breakfast on November 12, 2015 in Seattle, WA.

Shana has dedicated 13 years to developing and nurturing VV into the effective organization it is today. Her work has been, at times, both exhilarating and frustrating, and anyone who knows her admires her unwavering dedication and persistence to "support sustainable solutions to community challenges."

The key to her success has been her ability to navigate a business plan that collaborates with local leaders to develop thriving models of self sufficiency.

Her special guest is Sharon Leina Tasur, a young Maasai woman who  will share her perspective on VV's initiative,
Empowering Women Period , the biodegradable sanitary pad manufacturing project.

Who Benefits:  This year we will dance to fund a goat dairy project with the Lenana Girls School students in Kiminini, Kenya. The dairy will be set up to produce goat dairy products and train the girls and future farmers in achieving livelihoods in sustainable agriculture. Our goal is to fund 8 goats (6 female and 2 male) and a shed/shelter.

The first offspring from the goats will be given to women farmers who will in turn do the same as the project develops and the goats multiply.

We invite you to also keep it local by contributing a portion of your donation to Village Volunteers, who keeps all of these programs going throughout the year. You can designate the amount to each on the memo line of your check or a note with your cash donations. If you can't attend but would like to donate, go to Donate and write "Wassa" in the memo line.

Feel grateful this Thanksgiving feel and let your happy feet support women and girls!
