"The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color. Often at night there is lightning, but it quivers all alone."  ~Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

Join us in the bookstore on August 8th as we welcome science writer Laurel Braitman and Seattle author Andrew Bleiman discussing all things animals with their books Animal Madness: How Anxious Dogs, Compulsive Parrots, and Elephants in Recovery Help Us Understand Ourselves and ABC ZooBorns!; writer and illustrator A.K. Summers joins us on August 12th with her graphic memoir Pregnant Butch; on August 14th acclaimed Seattle author Ivan Doig reads from his most recent novel Sweet Thunder (new in paperback); Montana author Malcolm Brooks joins us on August 15th to read from his much-praised debut novel Painted Horses; on August 19th popular Seattle mystery novelist Chelsea Cain celebrates the beginning of a new series with the first book One Kick; lauded non-fiction author Mark Kurlansky and his daughter
