"When the paradigm shifts, everything sets to zero", Pete Thomson

July 2014
Issue #43

The role of the paradigm has to be one of the most favoured buzz words in business. Try and slip it into a conversation to see a wide range of reactions and you'll know what I mean.

However, in all seriousness, it does have a large part to play in how we function.  It it the latest set of rules we play by; the framework that we all accept as being the norm - until that is it changes. History is littered with significant developments in business that wiped out products and practices that we all thought would be around for years isn't it.

Something will come along that will rewrite the rule book so we have to adapt to ensure we are not operating in an outdated mode and with values that people have since dispensed with. The above quote is a stern reminder that when that happens what you had in your locker as say experience or past achievements counts for nothing.  We all start again from scratch and need to build up our profile and image all over again.  Are you set for the next big shift?

Don't Just Embrace Failure - Learn How to Manage it
I know there are some people who are so determined to put a positive spin on any of their actives that they refuse to use the 'F' word and I can see why.  Telling yourself you have done so can bring you down and eat into that limited reserve of energy.

The main thing is to learn from it and move on.  Stop dwelling on it for what might have been and beating yourself up in the process so you hesitate about going into the next venture.  It isn't easily done mind so I don't wish to come over all flippant - but it can wear you down if you don't address it.

So, check out this article from Dan Pickett and see if there are any areas where you can improve for when the inevitable happens.  As it says, fail fast!
Here's How to Get Your 9001 Auditors Competent
Now, of course, if someone is looking to become a professional auditor rather then just doing internal audits for their company then they need an IRCA approved course. However, the rest of us just need some structured and practical training to get us to be classed as competent.

The way I do that with my sites is to actually use their system on site and, after taking them through the theory with a short multi-choice exam and some case studies and have them shadow me on an audit of theirs, I get them to do three audits on their own which I pass off before I deem them competent. You have to do something to demonstrate you are competent remember.

I find that backing this up with screen capture videos to talk through the submitted reports and virtual hook ups over the web is a particularly effective way of delivering this.

A recent attendee on the course had this to say as she now moves onto doing her three audits:

"It's a great course and helped me understand ISO 9001 to the point where I feel happy and more confident to apply internal audits to the company.  With time and more than likely more questions and advice from yourself I should feel fully capable to apply ISO 9001 audits. Thank you.", RM, Wellhouse Leisure.

10 Risks Your Business Needs to Prepare For
Well that's a cheerful title, but you do need to be alert to what might trip you up. You have so much to keep your eye on when running a business so you might like this short summary of issues that you need to have control over from Jack Torrence.

I still, for example, come across companies that are solely reliant on a handful of suppliers or customers such that a sudden change in that arrangement can have significant effects.

Others issues may arise from regulations, personnel, reputation etc so you can be caught out from a variety of angles. Now, you won't be surprised to hear me say that if you operate a 9001 system all this would be catered fro as an agenda item in the Management Review meeting.  Just saying.

There's No Secret Formula for Small Business Success - Only This
Well, it's a nice idea. Some simple formula that we could all follow that would instantly transform our ideas into a successful and growing concern.  Well hard cheese - it doesn't exist!

However, articles like this one from Robert Reid may help soften the disappointment as he walks you through five aspects of running a business that you need to nail.

Some of this may not be 'rocket science' as they say, but it helps to be reminded and revisit the the issues you need to give your attention to and I was pleased to hear him mention solving the root cause of a problem.  That's in 9001 you know - oh you did. Fair enough.
