lay ministry

Dear Friends,

For nearly twenty years the Lay Ministry in the 21st

Century program has served the needs of the churches of the Pennsylvania Southeast, Penn Northeast, and Penn Central Conferences by providing both enrichment for lay leaders and training for licensed and commissioned ministers. Perhaps some members of your congregation have benefited from the courses offered in such diverse areas as Old and New Testaments, Stewardship, Evangelism, Theology, UCC History and Polity, and others. Perhaps someone in your congregation is participating in the program as a path to authorized ministry. Perhaps your own church has benefited from the ministry of a licensed pastor.

Recognizing the need for more comprehensive training for those seeking authorized ministry, in 2008 we expanded our licensed ministry program from three to five years. As we continue to transition into the 21st century, we are also exploring a stronger web presence, possible on-line courses, and additional programs for our Conferences. As our program expands, so must our financial resources.

Our program has been supported over the years through grants from each of the three participating Conferences, student tuition, and occasional grants from the national UCC. We are writing to ask your congregation to consider making a donation as well, so that we can continue to provide the kind of excellent instruction we have been offering.

We know that, in these changing days, the need for licensed and commissioned ministers will increase as fewer and fewer of our churches can afford full-time ordained pastors We also believe that, financial realities aside, empowering lay leadership can only strengthen our churches in their ability to minister in the name of Jesus Christ. We invite you to participate through the giving of your donation of any size to the building up of the body through lay ministry.

Donations should be made payable to Penn Northeast Conference, clearly marked "Lay Ministry in the 21st Century," and sent to Penn Northeast Conference, 431 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, PA 18071.

If you would like to know more about the program, please contact our Program Director, Rev. Sally Dries. Contact information is located at the end of this letter.

Many thanks, and blessings to you in your ministry.

Amigos to Turn Vision Into Reality

Please join the Amigos in praying for the people of Guatemala. A strong earthquake (6.9) hit along the Mexico-Guatemala border on July 7, setting off mudslides, damaging more than 80 homes, 40 severely and disrupting communications vital to the relief effort. At least three people died, including a newborn, and 33 people were injured, many with head injuries.  If you would like to help, contact our coordinators Roger and Karen Heim at [email protected]

After more than two years of planning, the Amigos de Guatemala and their partners in the town of Monte Margarita are just about ready to start building a clinic and to see it operating by the end of next year.

But we still need your help.
1.  If your church hasn't already scheduled one of the Amigos to speak to your congregation, please do so now. Contact Roger or Karen Heim at [email protected] or 610-481-9704.

2.  You can donate:
  • Click on the Donate through Just Give box on the PNEC homepage. Be sure to mark in the program box that your gift is designated for the "Guatemala Building Fund."
  • Send a check to the conference office, made out to PNEC with "Guatemala Building Fund" in the memo.
3.  Watch future issues of PNECThis Week to follow our progress.

4.  Like Amigos de Guatemala (Lehigh Valley) on Facebook and share our story with your friends.

5.  Consider coming to Guatemala to help us build or to be on a medical team.

June Arnold, 1631 Main Street, Northampton, PA,   18067, [email protected]

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

In speaking to you during the previous two Annual Meetings of the Penn Northeast Conference, I promised or warned you (depending on how you look at it) I would be asking for your help.  Today is the first of those days and I think it will not be the last, so let's get to it.
To refresh your memory I am the person who addressed concerns and issues regarding our Nation's Veterans.  At the last meeting I spoke as a representative of Valor Clinic Foundation that works toward improving the lives of veterans.
So here's the help I'm looking for.  In working with this organization my position is in outreach.  In order to facilitate my job, I'm asking if each church would send me the names, addresses, and contact information for any soup kitchens, shelters, and food banks located in your respective local area.  Please don't assume that someone else is sending me this information.  As of this writing, I will be working in six counties in our area and I anticipate working in more counties in the future.  Your help is greatly appreciated and because of your help, many veterans in need will gain the support necessary to continue to lead a productive life.
As many of you have helped our veterans in the past by supporting Valor, please continue to pray for us in our mission.  Further information on Valor can be found at www.valorclinic.org.  Please forward your information or any questions to [email protected].  Also, you can 'like' us on Facebook.
Thank you in advance for any and all of your efforts.
