Dear Jones Parents,

The leaves are beginning to change on the trees along State Street, so it must mean that school is about to start! We hope everyone has had a relaxing and rewarding summer with family and friends.

The first day of school is Tuesday, September 8, at 8:00 am. Students will follow a special schedule the first two days, attending their Academic Lab period first before going on to their regular classes. A copy of the first week's schedule follows below.

We are very excited about all the new things we have in store for your students this year. New programs, such as AP Capstone, computer science, dance, and expanded courses in pre-law and pre-engineering, are just a few of the innovative opportunities available to our students this year.

It is also my pleasure to welcome 24 outstanding new faculty members to our team, bringing our total professional staff to more than 100, including an added counselor, an ELL (English Language Learners) teacher, and our new assistant principal, Mr. Eric Mitchell. Our enrollment has grown from 880 just three years ago to 1670 students in grades 9 through 12.

Please plan to join us for our annual "Back-to-School" Night on Thursday, September 17. This is a great opportunity to walk through your students' schedules and meet the teachers they will be working with this year. Additional information is included with this letter.

We at Jones are committed to helping all students attain their full potential. Our "Ideal Graduate at Graduation" values continue to inform all our actions as we collaborate with our student and parent partners.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or my direct office number, 773-534-8606.

Go Eagles!

 Meet JCP's New AP

Meet Mr. Mitchell
This summer, Jones College Prep hired Mr. Eric Mitchell as its new Assistant Principal, joining Ms. Plunkett and Mr. Fay as well as Dr. Powers. Here he answers a few questions on his background and first impressions of Jones.

Q: What is your background?
A: My story begins in the suburbs of the city of Hartford, CT. I was born to a family of educators. The importance of education was instilled in me then. I came to the Midwest to further my education as a student at Northwestern University. I completed my undergraduate degree and began teaching in the Evanston community. For 10 years I taught social studies and language arts at one of the most ethnically and socio-economically diverse schools in the city. During my 10 years in the classroom, I also held the titles of department chair and team leader. During this time I also had the opportunity to obtain my Master's degree in Educational Leadership from National Louis University.

My leadership experiences have been vast. After obtaining my Master's I felt the need to grow as a leader. I left Evanston to join Chicago Public Schools as an instructional specialist for a high school dropout prevention program. There, I helped teachers improve their instructional practices through observations, modeling, coaching and reflective practices. During this time I also developed curriculum and assessments as well as provided professional development to teachers and administrators focusing on data informed decision making and improving school culture and climate. Over the past four years, I have experienced being an assistant principal at the elementary and high school levels for Chicago Public Schools. I also had the opportunity to be the principal of a 7th-12th grade charter school.
Q: What was your first impression of Jones College Prep?
A: My first few weeks at Jones have been great! I have been well received by all the staff, students, and parents that I've met. I am currently in "sponge mode". I am learning everything that I can about what it means to be part of the Jones Family.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your new job?
A: My various leadership experiences have prepared me for this opportunity at Jones. I am truly excited to be able to work with Dr. Powers, Ms. Plunkett, Mr. Fay and the entire Jones Community. I look forward to helping to make this school year spectacular.

Q: What are your interests outside of school?
A: When I am not an administrator, I find my work balance by spending quality time with my wife and three children doing various activities. I also like to exercise regularly, read and I'm quite the movie buff.

 Igniting Students & Staff
Through the generous donations of the Jones community, Friends of Jones funded Freshman Connection this summer, hosting members of the Class of 2019 over two weeks of orientation and team building.

The frosh welcome extended to the one-day Ignite event in August when students met with their senior ELITE mentors for more team-building and pirate-themed fun. The mentors warmed up to the task by practicing their games with teachers and staff prior.

ELITE mentors
Good luck, freshmen!

Last week, the mentors applied their team-building skills to the teachers and staff.
