Dear Jones Parents,

Thank you to everyone for helping make the start of our new school year such a success. Attendance has been outstanding (over 98%), and we had a great turnout for our annual Back-to-School Night on September 17. Our enrollment as of this week is 1,667. Even with this large student population, Jones retains its strong sense of community.

Please remember to check the FOJ newsletter and our jonescollegeprep.org website to follow all the events and news at Jones.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at 773-534-8606 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.
Principal

 Annual Fund Kick-off
Friends of Jones has just kicked off its ANNUAL FUND campaign and we want you to know this: A gift to Friends of Jones is a gift to all of our students.

Annual Fund donations are used to fund special JCP School Logoinitiatives and projects that are not otherwise covered by the school's annual operating budget.  These range from extra computers to sports team bus transportation, choir uniforms, school furniture and library research subscriptions.

The Annual Fund is the largest giving priority as every family can participate and show their support.  A meaningful gift from you  -- whether that's $10 or thousands -- is meaningful to us.

The Jones community is a caring community committed to the excellence of their students and we hope to show others that's the case with a high level of family participation. Why? Because high participation allows us to advance our fundraising with corporate funders and sponsors.  Businesses invest when they see families invest.

Leadership giving levels from $500 and up are especially critical in reaching our fundraising goals each year. Please go to our WEBSITE to read more about the annual fund or click this LINK  to make your tax deductible donation today!

Q&A with Librarian Francis Feeley
JCP's new librarian Francis Feeley comes to Jones from the CPS elementary school Inter-American Magnet School, Chicago's longest standing Spanish/English dual language program, where he worked as the school librarian for nine years.

A native of Buffalo, New York, he originally came to the Midwest to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he studied psychology, and later returned to Buffalo to get his masters in school psychology at State University of New York. He's been working for CPS since 1994 and enjoys swimming, singing, theater, skiing, travel, history, politics, world affairs and "Spanish language everything" in addition to reading.

Recently FOJ asked Mr. Feeley about the books that shaped him and his first impressions of Jones.

Q: What books most inspired or affected you as a young reader?

A: I attended what could be described as a "college prep high school" at Canisius, the all-boys Jesuit high school in Buffalo. We read a lot of classics, and I was amazed then by how our instructors guided us to discover connections between those works and our own lives and communities in works such as Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I also fell immediately in love with the work of William Shakespeare, and that enthusiasm propelled me with into the world of theatre as an audience member and an actor.

Q: What are your favorite books/authors today?

A: I enjoy a wide range of books but I get really excited about historical nonfiction. I am doing my best to figure out how we - as humanity - have arrived at this point in history and what we must do to confront the many challenges we face as a result of our actions in the past and present. I read a lot of books about colonial history, United States history, Mexican history, and the history of the Ancient Americas. Recent favorites include King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild (which I paired with Barbara Kingsolver's fictional The Poisonwood Bible) and The Empire of Necessity by Greg Grandin. Right now I am in the middle of 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann.

Q: What's your first impression of the library?

A: The library is beautiful! It's a flexible and well equipped space that can host multiple groups at the same time (indoors OR outdoors!). The print collection is excellent and has plenty of room to grow. The floor to ceiling windows provide beautiful views as the city of Chicago's rich history and vibrant present beckon at all times. The energy the students bring to the space is positive, productive, and infectious! The library is an ideal space to build excitement around learning, including learning that combines curriculum content and student interests with educational technology. I hope to contribute to a culture at Jones where students access and analyze information effectively and create and share unique and compelling information products.
