Celebrate National Library Week #NLW14
National Library Week kicks off on Sunday, April 13, and communities everywhere will be buzzing to the tune of "Lives Change @ Your Library." Encourage your patrons to Tweet their stories as to how the library has changed their life. This  week-long celebration and the stories that will be showcased offer a rich opportunity to honor the value of public libraries. See you on Twitter at #NLW14 and #LivesChange.
Update on E-Rate
IMLS recognizes National Library Week (#NLW14) with a public hearing, Libraries and Broadband: Urgency & Impact, scheduled for Thursday, April 17, from 9:30 am-12:00 pm EST. The program takes place at DC Public Library's Martin Luther King Memorial Library and will "...explore ideas for streamlining and increasing the efficiency of the E-Rate program and the potential of library programs, leveraging high-speed connections, to drive education, community and economic development." The entire event will be streamed live on youtube and includes El Paso Public Library, TX, Director Dionne Mack and Omaha Public Library, NE, Director Gary Wasdin. Learn more and listen in!
Seattle: City of Lights and Literature
Seattle, WA, is well-known as one of the most literate cities in the U.S. Now, with leadership support from The Seattle Public Library, the city is vying for designation as a Unesco City of Literature. If awarded, Seattle will be the second city in the U.S. and the eighth in the world to enter this literary pantheon. The Seattle Public Library has contributed mightily to the city's reputation as a literary capital, having created the "One Book, One City" program model in 1998. The library will be a key player in the four programming initiatives that form the basis of Seattle's proposal to Unesco. Check-out what's on the literary horizon in Seattle!

The Enchanted Garden
Howard County Library System, MD, opened its Enchanted Garden in 2012. Today, it provides year-round magic, learning and enrichment to people of all ages. Its comprehensive programs - all designed to educate and inspire healthy lifestyles by fostering a love of nature - are celebrated in a brief video. The Enchanted Garden thrives on a tapestry of rich community partnerships including the local school system, Howard County Master Gardeners, the local 4H Club and the local food bank. Greetings from Kansas
Congratulations to the Kansas City Public Library, MO, winner of ALA's 2014 Excellence in Library Programming Award. The award, sponsored by ALA's Cultural Communities Fund, specifically honors the library's original exhibit Greetings from Kansas City: Postcard Views of a Midwestern Metropolis, 1900-1950 and related programming. The exhibit will be reprised in late April for a two-month run! Read the full release!
San Antonio Book Fest: Something for Everyone
San Antonio Public Library, TX, sponsored the second annual San Antonio Book Festival on April 5. The event celebrated "[the city's] shared love of writing, the pleasure of reading and the importance of libraries in community life" and featured a stellar line-up of more than 90 acclaimed national and regional authors including Texas Medal of Arts winner Sandra Cisneros and 2014 Caldecott winner Brian Floca.
