AZ Creative Aging

The Arizona Commission on the Arts is seeking up to 10 professional teaching artists throughout Maricopa County who have a serious, committed interest in working with older adults in community and care settings for the inaugural, five-month AZ Creative Aging Teaching Artist Institute.

The first component of the Arts Commission's three-year AZ Creative Aging Initiative, the Teaching Artist Institute is a comprehensive training program that will introduce teaching artists to the variety of settings, programs, and partners that make up the creative aging field. Participants will receive training facilitated by master teaching artists, work with a mentor throughout the course of the Institute, and engage in applied learning through guided, on-site teaching opportunities.

Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, December 1, 2015.

Workshops: ADA Compliance for Arts Organizations
ADA Workshops
Presented in partnership with the Sedona International Film Festival and the Tubac Center of the Arts, the Arts Commission is offering ADA focused workshops in Sedona and Tubac with Eileen Bagnall, Executive Director of VSA Arizona and ADA policy expert. 

Two sessions will be offered in both Sedona and Tubac: 
  • ADA Compliance: Know the Basics - an introduction to the basic concepts, principles and considerations of ADA compliance, ideal for individuals new to the field. 
  • Beyond Compliance: Advancing ADA Practices - a more advanced exploration of best practices and next steps to move your organization to the next level of inclusivity. This session builds on the previous session, but may be attended on its own by those already familiar with the basics. 
Admission is $12 for each session, or $20 for both.

Robert Booker Joins National Center for Creative Aging Board of Directors
Robert Booker, Executive Director of the Arizona Commission on the Arts, has joined the National Center for Creative Aging's Board of Directors. 
The National Center for Creative Aging is dedicated to fostering an understanding of the vital relationship between creative expression and healthy aging, and to developing programs that build upon this understanding. 
AZ Poet Laureate Receives Public Humanities Scholar Award
On Friday, November 13, 2015, AZ Humanities awarded the Dan Shilling Public Humanities Scholar Award to Arizona Poet Laureate Alberto Álvaro Ríos. Filmmaker Paul Espinosa; Dr. Michael Vincent, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, Northern Arizona University; and community-based theatre artist Rivka Rocchio were also honored at the ceremony.

Governor_s Arts Awards Nominations
2016 Poetry Out Loud State Finals Return to Eight, Arizona PBS
The Arizona Commission on the Arts is pleased to announce that the 2016 Arizona Poetry Out Loud state finals will return to the downtown Phoenix studios of Eight, Arizona PBS. The event, which will be held in March 2016, will be taped and broadcast to communities throughout the state that carry Eight, Arizona PBS programming. 
2016 Governor's Arts Awards Nominations
Arizona Citizens for the Arts and the Office of the Governor are currently accepting nominations for the 35th annual Governor's Arts Awards. This year they've added a new category to honor small, local businesses for their contributions to Arizona's arts sector. Visit the Arizona Citizens for the Arts website to submit your nomniations.
