The Dating and Relationship Group:
Sexual Barriers to Intimacy
The problems of sexual compulsivity, sexual addiction, and sexual anorexia constitute a set of conditions that is receiving greater attention in the media and the popular literature. Yet these conditions are often distorted, largely misunderstood, and frequently caricatured.
In the next meeting of the Dating and Relationship Group on Saturday, December 5, 2015 (12:00 to 1:15 PM), I will provide a sound description of the signs and features of these conditions. Moreover, I will summarize the psychological factors that give rise to their emergence, and describe in detail their function as defensive processes designed to ward off elements of relational intimacy that are feared. The negotiation of intimacy will be considered an essential aspect of adulthood that is seldom managed without challenge or difficulty.
Co-dependence is substantive condition which negatively impacts many domains of functioning. Although quite popularized, codependency is frequently misunderstood. For example, codependency is commonly viewed as being more prevalent among women than men; however, recent scientific evidence suggests that the presence of codependency among men is increasing and may actually be more resistant to change in men as opposed to women. Numerous social theorists have argued that males at all developmental levels are challenged with how to respond to the culturally-sanctioned empowerment of women which has gradually imploded the ideals of independence, aggression, and strength that once characterized "masculinity." Given this deconstruction of what it means to be "masculine," some experts believe that codependent tendencies in men are being organically reinforced as gender roles evolve and change.
In the next meeting of the Men's Group on Saturday, December 5, 2015, 10:45 AM to 12:00 PM noon, I will present a contemporary definition of co-dependence. I will describe the various factors that negatively impact male development and set the stage for codependent tendencies. Finally, Ross Rosenberg's model for overcoming codependency will be introduced as an important resource for overcoming codependent patterns.
