Happy Thursday! Happy National Bosses Day.
I still remember the man who made my jaw drop, every day in every setting... on the job.
He was my "boss" in Rockville, MD. He ran a nonprofit organization for which I was the development director. He built programs, wrote grants, supervised a 30+ person staff, supported a 90-person volunteer board and served a large community of people in need. What I remember, in addition to his remarkable creativity and efficiency, was his humor, equanimity and kindness. Under his helm, the organization has grown to more than 75 staff and 800 volunteers serving 35,000+ people in the greater Washington, DC area.
Bosses have personalities like anyone else, and not everyone is either funny or outgoing
.
David Gamse wasn't an extrovert. He didn't impose himself on a situation, but his presence was always felt. He was a listener, one of those people whether bank president or street paver, who made you feel that you and your ideas were important. He knew and recognized openly the value of each member of the organization, from the head of the board to the bus driver on the street. He created a team.
There are many articles on "What makes a great boss?" I especially like the one
here which identifies not only what makes a good boss but what makes an
amazing boss.
Join Us at TODAY Chamber Business After Hours at
Basalt Fitness
and share a toast for all the mentors, leaders and bosses who have made our lives better
Then stick around this weekend for the
1st Annual Basalt Pumpkin Jazz & Roots Festival in Downtown Basalt and Willits Town Center.

Applications for 2016 Business After Hours hosting are already exciting. There's an idea for a patio party, another for showroom gathering. Prospective co-hosts are planning together to create great networking and after-hours social events for the new year.
Please submit your application by November 15.
Applicants must be members of the Basalt Chamber in good standing. Preference will be given to those who've not hosted an event in the last 12 months and for creative and collaborative themes.
But don't let that put you off. If you'd like to host an event and don't have a co-host in mind,
contact us and we'll help create a match. If you don't have a storefront and would like to co-host an event with a bricks and mortar business, let us know and we'll connect you. There are many ways to get involved.
Business After Hours are an important Chamber networking benefit. Hosts have an opportunity to showcase your businesses and connect informally with other members. Download your
application here and
email it by November 1 or mail it to Basalt Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 514, Basalt, CO 81621.
