New Report Looks at the Role Generations of Family Members Play in Overall Resiliency and Success
At Tuesday's (May 13) National Press Club event in Washington, DC, Generations United and the Alliance for Children and Families released their latest report, Intergenerational Family Connections: The Relationships that Support a Strong America. The report, based on findings of a new poll Generations United and the Alliance for Children and Families commissioned from Harris Interactive, bolsters one focus of the United Nations 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family in 2014: the strength of intergenerational solidarity and social cohesion. Among the report findings: 61 percent of Americans with living parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, great-grandparents, or great-grandchildren reported giving extended family financial support for basic needs, e.g. housing, food, and transportation, amounting to an average of $3,800 annually.  Modern Family Relationships Support a Strong America
In their Huffington Post piece, Donna Butts and Susan Dreyfus explains how today's modern families are a parachute for one another. "This chute is woven not by parents alone," according to Butts and Dreyfus, "but by extended family such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and others who work together to allow all generations of a family to not only land safely, but also thrive."  Generations United Celebrating with Seabury
We're excited that Donna Butts will be awarded the 2014 Leadership in Aging Award at Seabury Resources for Aging's 90th anniversary dinner at the National Press Club on June 1. The award, according to Seabury, is for our organization's "work as a champion of the development and expansion of policies and programs bringing children, youth and older adults together."  Legacy Project Announces Winners of Listen to a Life Essay Contest Michelle Jiang's touching essay on how a caring teacher once helped her grandfather, Rulin Jin, get into college won the Grand Prize for the Legacy Project's Listen to a Life Contest. The 13-year-old was among the young participants (8-18 years old) who interviewed older adults aged 50 or over about their life experiences, then submitted a 300-word essay. This year's youngest entrant was nine years old, the oldest was 98 years old. Meet the winners. |

Department of Health and Human Services announces funds to support a National Resource Center to enhance the capacity of programs designed to serve abandoned infants, young children and their families, particularly infants and children infected with HIV/AIDS, or perinatally exposed to a dangerous drug.
